Barcelona is one of my absolute favorite cities in Europe. It's no wonder I've written a love letter to Barcelona and my tips for a city trip to Barcelona.

After Berlin, Barcelona is the most visited city in Europe by me. I love buying new guidebooks about Barcelona and devouring books set in this Catalan city.

Therefore, I have compiled my recommendations for the best travel guides in Barcelona along with additional literary tips.

When it comes to exploring Barcelona, the right travel companion can make a big difference. For first-time visitors, I recommend the DuMont direct guide, the Lonely Planet guide, Top 10 Barcelona by DK, and the Baedeker guide to Barcelona. For really any destination, I buy myself a picture atlas from Dumont. I also own the one for Barcelona. It includes detailed and special tips with background stories. Lonely Planet city guides often provide a surprise or two. The guide for Barcelona is also great and has many tips and maps for each neighborhood, even off the main tourist spots.

If you're looking for the typical attractions in Barcelona, this book won't make you happy. However, if you're searching for individual paths away from the tourist crowds, I recommend this book.

In addition to the well-known attractions, Barcelona also offers a multitude of exciting lesser-known places. There are numerous hidden spots and alleys off the main streets. Barcelona also boasts a vibrant culinary scene with small, family-run tapas bars serving traditional Catalan dishes.

Especially in the Lonely Planet or on specialized websites for Barcelona, you'll find information on flea markets, food festivals, and music festivals.

The Raval neighborhood, which has transformed from a notorious area into a cultural hub, is home to the MACBA museum as well as various multicultural cafes, bars, and festivals.

Montjuïc Castle transforms in the summer into a venue for a variety of concerts and an open-air cinema screening films in their original language.

I don't reread many books. The book about the Cemetery of Forgotten Books definitely belongs on that list (I enjoyed the book once as an audiobook as well). A real Barcelona novel that you won't want to put down. Promise.

Again, a Zafón book set in Barcelona. The second part of The Shadow of the Wind is no different from its predecessor. Here too you get to know a haunting side of Barcelona away from the tourist spots.

I've read many historical novels. The construction of a cathedral is intertwined with the hero's story as in "The Pillars of the Earth." The setting, of course, is Barcelona (the two books should not be compared).

The Santa Maria del Mar, which is the focus of the book, is the most beautiful church in the city: a church of the people, built by the people for the people.

Part 3 and another masterpiece after "The Shadow of the Wind" and "The Angel's Game." Again, a captivating book about the Cemetery of Forgotten Books and Barcelona.

Reading the previous two books is not mandatory, but it makes the connections easier to understand.

As a fan of Barcelona, the 18 euros for this book was a good investment. Daniel Brühl vividly describes the Barcelona that I fell in love with over 10 years ago.

He shares with me not only the love for the city, the Catalans, and the football club, but he also lives in the city from time to time. A friend who studied in Barcelona years ago has instantly fallen in love with the book as well.

Brühl accurately describes locations that were already "in" back then (no surprise, he is also from my generation). Locations that I still love to revisit on every visit to Barcelona.

The must-see attractions in Barcelona include the Sagrada Família, Park Güell, and Casa Milà (La Pedrera). Barcelona offers a variety of cultural and architectural highlights for visitors.

From Barcelona, you can take day trips to Costa Brava, Girona, and Sitges.

For visiting the Sagrada Família, respectful clothing is required, meaning covered shoulders and knee-length pants or skirts.
