Recommendations for Berlin Travel Guides

When searching for a guide for Berlin, choosing can be really tough. In bookstores, guides for Berlin almost fill an entire shelf. You also find numerous guides online that you can download for free as PDFs.

I always have printed travel guides for research before a trip. While traveling, I often use eBooks or foldable maps, like the city map with walking tours for Neukölln from Berta Berlin (Order here for an unbeatable 5 euros).

In Berlin, you can never know everything. Therefore, it's worth looking at a travel guide even as a local. I have listed my favorites for you here:

My favorite guide for all cities with a city map. Here you find all the information you need about highlights, tours, and some insider tips in a concise format. This small and very compact guide (no fluff) always fits in my pocket! Recommended purchase!

Is the DuMont Direct guide too compact for you? Then I recommend the paperback from the same publisher. It has much more information on the various districts, sights, and tips for hotels, dining, shopping, and excursions.

I particularly love the suggestions for city walks, each with an excerpt from the city map. There is background information, for example, about the history of the luxury shopping temple KaDeWe, and a page about the 'Skyscraper on Weberwiese', which is now a protected monument serving as a model for GDR architecture.

The recommended 14 tours are divided into specific thematic focuses (Nazi capital Berlin, from Baroque to Rococo, or in the Stasi prison) through the various districts. The author also reveals private insider tips. Very successful and also a recommended purchase.

I love this series from Dumont for city trips so much that I keep buying them. This brand new one for Berlin is no different:

From top destinations and highlights to the best places for culture, cool or relaxed spots like the Wannsee (of course). There is also an overview of market halls, unique tours, or the best currywurst stands. This guide is particularly special.

The counterpart to this photo travel guide I had previously bought for Hamburg. So, I didn't hesitate to buy the Berlin guide as well. I wasn't disappointed. Here you discover awesome places to photograph and see some locations from a different perspective.

This travel book is also for hobby photographers who love searching for architectural highlights with their cameras. This book is a solid 280 pages thick. It includes thematic routes that help you find interesting places and photography motives. Plus, it provides a wealth of background information about each location.

What I appreciate about this travel guide is the recommendation for the best time of day to visit each location. You no longer have to think about it and receive this hint directly.

As an alternative to the well-known sights, you can explore the guide "111 Places in Berlin You Must See". I select an unknown place from this guide before each trip and plan to visit that insider tip.

This is also an excellent book for Berliners, as locals usually remain within their own neighborhoods.

Blogger friend Inka (here is her blog) has written this great travel guide for Dumont with 52 tips for excursions in and around Berlin. I'm quite sure these tips are fantastic. Unfortunately, I haven't had a copy in hand yet, as there has been no trip to the capital due to COVID. I will catch up on that.
