Costa Rica stretches from the Pacific Ocean in the west to the Caribbean Sea in the east. To the north, it borders Nicaragua, and to the south, Panama. Costa Rica has a tropical climate. The country is a popular travel destination all year round with impressive flora and fauna. Costa Rica offers great beaches and pristine rainforests. In addition to the warm coasts, there are also regions where it is pleasantly cool due to their elevation. Nighttime temperatures can drop below 15 degrees Celsius.

There are several factors to consider in order to best plan your vacation. In this article, I will introduce you to the different seasons and climatic conditions in Costa Rica so that you can choose the best time to visit this beautiful country.

The best time to visit Costa Rica is during the dry season, which lasts from December to April. During this time, rainfall is lower, the weather is sunny, and temperatures range from 24 to 30° C. However, the rainy season from May to November also offers advantages such as lush landscapes, fewer tourists, and lower prices.

The high season in Costa Rica is between December and March. During this time, many guests visit the country. The rainy season ends in November, and it gradually becomes drier.

Costa Rica generally has two main seasons: the dry season (Invierno, also referred to as high season) and the rainy season (Verano, also known as low season). Both seasons have their pros and cons, and the choice of the best time to visit depends on your personal preferences and activities you want to undertake during your stay in Costa Rica.

Note that the climate in Costa Rica can vary significantly depending on geographical location. The Pacific and Caribbean coasts have a warm climate year-round while the inland and highland regions (Monteverde) can exhibit cooler temperatures. This diverse climate in Costa Rica allows for a variety of activities and attractions for us tourists.

The dry season is the most popular travel time in Costa Rica. It lasts from December to April and offers sunny weather, high temperatures, and less precipitation. During this time, you can expect dry conditions along the coasts and in most parts of the country. Temperatures generally range from 27 to 32 degrees Celsius at the coast. It is cooler in the higher mountainous regions. This is also the best time for outdoor activities like hiking, beach outings, wildlife watching in national parks, surfing, or diving.

The transition period between the dry season and the rainy season in Costa Rica is in May and November. During these months, occasional rain showers may occur, but they are usually shorter and less intense than during the rainy season. Temperatures remain warm, and the landscape is lush and incredibly beautiful. This is a great time to travel to avoid the tourist crowds while enjoying pleasant temperatures and somewhat lower prices.

Even if it is the rainy season in Costa Rica, it does not mean that it rains every day from morning to night. The rainy season runs from May to early November. It rains more often than during the dry season, usually in the afternoon or evening. The mornings are often sunny and clear. The rainy season offers some advantages such as fewer tourists, particularly due to the green landscapes and blooming plants. Therefore, the rainy season in Costa Rica is also referred to as the Green Season. Other advantages include lower hotel prices and an increased likelihood of seeing wildlife such as toucans, monkeys, and turtles.

If you are interested in activities such as rafting or visiting rainforests, we find the rainy season to be an exciting time to explore Costa Rica.

Not always does a dream vacation mean just sun, heat, and dryness. This is especially true in Costa Rica. Without rain, the country would not be so green, and there wouldn't be such a variety of animals and plants.

Especially during the Green Season, which is the time from May to November, Costa Rica shows itself in all its splendor: The vibrant green of the leaves, the many flowers, and the rushing streams and rivers create a feeling of pristine beauty - almost like paradise.

Certain spectacles like the nesting of sea turtles or the opportunity to observe humpback whales with their newborns make this time particularly attractive.

Furthermore, it doesn't rain all day during the Green Season: Most of the time, it is dry from morning to afternoon, leaving plenty of time for activities. If it starts to rain, you can cozy up under a roof and enjoy the rain this way. And if you want to enjoy the warm rain of Costa Rica, you can simply don a rain jacket and be rewarded with nature up close.

• December to March: These months are suitable for most activities - from beach vacations to road trips. The adjacent months of November and April are also great for travels to the Pacific coast and inland.

• February and March, along with September, are ideal for trips to the Caribbean side.

• May to November: ideal for observing nature, as the animal and plant life presents itself in a special variety during this time.

• From May to October, it rains a lot in many regions of Costa Rica, especially on the Pacific coast and inland. There is high humidity. Flooding can also occur, making some roads impassable.

• September and October represent the 'big' rainy season on the Pacific coast with correspondingly high rainfall amounts. This is especially true for the region around Monteverde. On the Caribbean coast, rainfall is only slightly higher compared to the rest of the year.

• July and the Christmas season: During these times, especially many American tourists travel to Costa Rica due to the holiday periods.

• Although Costa Rica is only occasionally affected by hurricanes, such extreme weather events can also occur. Hurricanes can happen from late May to early December, with the highest likelihood in October and November.

The Caribbean coast of Costa Rica is characterized by warm but not overly hot temperatures year-round. It rarely cools down below 20 degrees. Even in the dry season from December to April, it can rain here. September is also a good time to travel to the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica: it is one of the months with the fewest rainy days in the region.

The Caribbean coast of Costa Rica is known for its picturesque beaches, lush vegetation, and diverse wildlife. The coastal city of Puerto Limón is a popular tourist destination offering a range of activities such as boat tours through the Tortuguero canals, where you can observe diverse wildlife including caimans, monkeys, and exotic birds. The crystal-clear waters are perfect for snorkeling and diving, and the coastal towns offer a wide range of restaurants and bars where you can enjoy delicious local cuisine.

If you prefer moderate temperatures and eternal spring, you will feel particularly comfortable in the Valle Central, the Central Valley of Costa Rica. The maximum temperatures there hover around 25 degrees year-round. At night, it cools down to about 15 degrees on average. The most rain falls between May and October. The months of January to March are particularly dry.

The capital city San José is also located in the Central Valley. Almost three-quarters of Costa Ricans live in this region. San José is a cultural and economic center with a lively atmosphere. Visitors can explore the National Museum, which offers insight into the country's history and culture, or take a stroll through the vibrant Mercado Central to discover local products and handicrafts. The Central Valley is also home to stunning volcanoes like Poás and Irazú, which attract hikers and nature lovers. Poás, with a main crater diameter of 1.7 kilometers, is among the largest volcanoes on Earth.

The Caribbean coast of Costa Rica is known for its picturesque beaches, lush vegetation, and diverse wildlife. Those looking for a beach and swimming vacation will feel especially comfortable here between mid-November and April, as this is when there are the most sunshine hours and the fewest rainy days. Particularly the months of January to March are (comparatively) dry.

The rainy season, lasting from May to November, brings more frequent and intense rain showers, although there can also be sunny spells during this time. It is important to note that the climate along the Pacific coast can vary depending on the exact location, but the dry season generally offers better conditions for all activities like beach outings, snorkeling, and surfing.

Surfers, in particular, find ideal conditions here. If a storm brews up, you just have to leave the water for a moment. The water temperatures are pleasant year-round, ranging from 27 to 28 degrees.

On the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, temperatures can reach as high as 35 degrees. At night, the thermometer usually stays above 20 degrees.

In this region of Costa Rica, there are incredibly beautiful beaches that invite relaxation and surfing alike. Tamarindo is a well-known coastal town famous for its surf spots and vibrant nightlife. We are fans of Santa Teresa, which is much quieter. This coast is also ideal for whale watching tours, boat trips to nearby islands, and exploring the lush mangrove forests (Manuel Antonio National Park).

I found June to be the optimal travel time. Not too many tourists and plenty of space in the water while surfing. The daily rain showers didn't bother us. We even had days when it didn't rain at all, or only at night.

In December, many American and Canadian tourists are here for Christmas and New Year's. For them, the journey is short. Prices for flights and accommodations are then higher.

The best time to visit the highlands in Costa Rica, particularly for places like Monteverde and Arenal Volcano, is during the dry season from December to April. This offers pleasant climatic conditions with less rainfall. During this time, visibility is clearer, and you have a good chance of enjoying the magnificent landscapes and volcanic activity.

The high season in Monteverde and Arenal coincides with the dry season and takes place from December to April. Especially in December, popular tourist attractions (Selvatura and activities at Arenal Volcano) can be very crowded, as many travelers want to take advantage of the optimal conditions.

The rainy season in this region lasts from May to November. Although frequent rain showers can occur during this time, the rainy season also has its advantages. Nature blooms in lush green, and there are fewer people around. If occasional rain showers don't bother you, the rainy season is a great way to explore the natural beauty of the highlands in Costa Rica in a quieter atmosphere. However, keep in mind that the weather in the mountains can be unpredictable, regardless of the season. Therefore, it is advisable to prepare for different weather conditions.

Those venturing into the highland regions of Costa Rica will be rewarded: Landscapes like the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and Arenal Volcano provide a stunning backdrop with dense cloud forests, waterfalls, and hot springs. These regions are a paradise for nature lovers and adventure seekers who can discover a diverse range of flora and fauna along the hiking trails. A special highlight is the canopy tour through the Monteverde Cloud Forest, where you can enjoy spectacular views from great heights. Additionally, I was thrilled by the Selvatura Zipline over the cloud forest, racing over the treetops.

However, our visit in June was not quite ideal. It was cool, during a nighttime wildlife tour it poured down rain, and unfortunately, we didn't see any animals.

Costa Rica offers something for everyone: from relaxing beach vacations to exciting outdoor activities and cultural explorations. Throughout the year, Costa Rica has a pleasant climate, so you can experience the beauty and diversity of the country at any time.

I was there in June, during the 'Green Season,' the rainy season in Costa Rica. The months May - August are also referred to as the little rainy season. In June, the weather was optimal. Rainfall was rare and brief, mainly at night. Everything was dry again during the day.

Overall, the months of May, June, September, and October can be good options for travel in the low season. However, it's important to consider the specific climatic conditions and regional differences for your desired travel location or region.
