Best Travel Time for Thailand: Experience with the Rainy Season

Best Time to Travel to Thailand with information about the rainy season & ideal months

'When does the sun shine in Thailand?' - 'How bad is the rain in December in Koh Chang and Chiang Mai?' - 'Can we fly to Phuket and Khao Lak in October?' - these are just some questions we frequently receive.

That's why we have summarized the best months for a trip to Thailand for you.

Thailand is large and stretches thousands of kilometers from north to south. It's no surprise we can't simply answer the question of the best time to visit Thailand.

In general, we say: You can vacation in Thailand all year round. It really depends on where and in which region you want to spend your holiday. Do you want to book firmly or be flexible on-site, hop from island to island, and react spontaneously to rain?

  • Decide where to go: which region(s) you want to travel to.
  • Determine which month you want to travel to Thailand.
  • Set travel duration and period.
  • Book your trip.

Summary by Region

From December to February, it is dry season, considered the best time to travel to Thailand, with temperatures around 25° C that are pleasantly warm and humidity is low. During this time, temperatures can drop at night to around 10° C. From May to October, it is the rainy season in Thailand.

  • March to May is the hottest time, and it can get very humid.

  • Peak season is between November and March. From October onwards, it becomes drier with summer temperatures around 30° C or higher.

Between May and October, it is the rainy season in Thailand. During this time, you should always expect rainfall (often short and heavy). The humidity is also very high. In general, it rains more in the south than in the north.

If you want a beach holiday, you should prefer the east coast (May to October). If you're interested in the culture and history of Thailand (Northern and Central Thailand), the dry season from November to February is a good choice.

Peak season in Thailand is between November and March. After November, the rainy season ends, and it becomes increasingly dry. Most parts of the country experience dry weather (December to April) with high temperatures around 30° C or more. Therefore, it is said that the best time to travel to Thailand provides the best conditions.

The cheapest months for Thailand are May, June, and September. From June to October is the rainy season in Thailand; you must expect short but heavy downpours. However, you cannot compare the rainy season in Thailand with a rainy day in Europe. The showers are often brief, providing a welcome relief in the humid climate of the rainy season and usually end within minutes.

General Note on Climate:

Due to global climate change, we can also observe shifting rainy seasons in Thailand. This makes it harder to predict the weather ahead of time. However, the following tips and seasons still serve as a guideline for your booking.

For finding a good hotel, we recommend the platform Booking.com. We always book our accommodations on this platform or directly with American Express since we receive additional discounts with the American Express Platinum Card (see here for details, worth it only for frequent travelers).

Where to Go in Thailand?

To find out the best months for your vacation, it is important to know which regions you want to visit.

Do you want to take a tour and visit both the north and the islands in the south and Central Thailand with Bangkok? Or would you prefer to relax in Phuket, Koh Samui, or Koh Phangan?

The weather on the islands in the south can be quite different. The rainy season in the Gulf of Thailand (Koh Samui, Koh Tao, and Koh Phangan) occurs at a different time than in the Andaman Sea (Koh Phi Phi, Phuket, and Koh Lanta).

For spontaneous travelers who do not book anything before the trip, this advantage means that you simply need to switch coasts. By the way, flights are quite cheap to get from Phuket to Koh Samui.

So here you will find all our experience after several trips to Thailand about what we consider the best time to visit Thailand.

When to Go? Tips by Travel Time

Due to the monsoon, there are these three seasons in Thailand. Dry season does not mean it never rains. In contrast, it always rains shortly and heavily during the rainy season, almost never the whole day.

Here are all the facts in detail:

1. November - February: Northeast Monsoon

The weather is then dry and cooler. The average temperatures range from 26° - 29° C. The risk of rain is low.

From November to February, dry season prevails in many parts of Thailand, particularly influenced by the Northeast Monsoon. This is a popular travel period for tourists, as the weather is pleasant and dry in most parts of the country. Especially around Christmas and New Year, this is peak travel time, making Thailand an extremely popular travel destination.

Ideal Destinations:

  • Bangkok: The capital of Thailand offers plenty of hotels and guesthouses. There's a place to stay for everyone.
  • Chiang Mai: The city in Northern Thailand is always a good choice.
  • Koh Samui: This island in the Gulf of Thailand is ideal for a beach holiday as well as diving and snorkeling.
  • Krabi: This province in the south of Thailand is known for its beautiful beaches and islands, as well as its impressive karst rock formations, offering numerous opportunities for climbing and hiking.

2. May - October: Southwest Monsoon and Rainy Season

It is very hot, and heavy monsoon rain can occur almost daily. In some regions, there may be flooding and landslides. It rains the most in October.

My thoughts on the rainy season are discussed further down.

  • Chiang Mai: The northern Thai city receives less rain than other parts of the country. Here you can see many cultural sites (great temples) or enjoy nature.
  • Phuket: Although located on the west coast, you will also have less rain here than in other parts of the country. Ideal for a beach holiday, diving, and other water sports.
  • Khao Yai National Park: This national park in northeastern Thailand also receives less rain. Ideal for outdoor activities such as hiking.

3. Hot Season - Transition Period

From mid-March to May, temperatures rise to 35 - 40 degrees Celsius. It is very hot and humid.

Anyone who has problems with extreme heat should avoid the country from mid-April. If there's a rain shower, the humidity becomes extremely high, which can lead to some people feeling faint.

Rainy Season

Between June and October, it is monsoon and thus rainy season. The most rainy days occur in October.

Best Time to Visit Thailand for Tours

Are you uncertain and don't feel like reading the entire article? Then here's the answer to your question of when is the best time to travel to Thailand:

In general, it is said that between November and February, the likelihood of good weather is highest. A lot of sunshine and little rain is usually guaranteed. The rainy risk is low.

Our opinion: From late December to late February, it should be dry everywhere. It's not too hot and usually dry.

However, prices are also highest during this period. The absolute peak travel time is around Christmas and New Year. Then you must book your accommodation in advance on the popular islands in the south and in Bangkok.

If rain showers occur, they are heavy but short. After 1-2 hours, you won't even notice that it has rained at all.

Temperatures around 26° - 32° C in Southern Thailand and around 20° - 24° C in Northern Thailand at Chiang Mai make for a very pleasant stay.

Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Pai)

In general, it is cooler in Northern Thailand than in the south or Central Thailand.

The best time to visit Northern Thailand is from November to March. Due to the Northwest Monsoon, it is dry with temperatures around 24 - 33 degrees Celsius. Nights below 10° C can occasionally happen here, and in higher elevations, temperatures below zero are possible.

In Northern Thailand, there are actually three seasons: hot summer, cool autumn, and rainy season with lots of rain.

The rainy season is from June to October, with the strongest rains occurring between August and October.

It gets very hot in April and May. If you enjoy high temperatures up to 40 degrees Celsius, you can also travel in the north during that time.

Weather in the Gulf of Thailand

Southern Thailand is divided into the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand.

Andaman Sea: Phuket, Khao Lak, Krabi, Koh Lanta, Koh Yao Noi, Koh Yao Yai, Phang-Nga, Trang, Koh Phi Phi.

Gulf of Thailand: Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, Surat Thani.

In the south, it rains more with 2,400 mm/year compared to the north (only 1,400 mm/year).

In the Gulf of Thailand, the rainy season lasts from September to early December, and heavy rain showers and storms can accompany your trip.

In contrast, the rainy season in the Andaman Sea is from April to October.

If you only want to visit Southern Thailand, one option is to start with the Andaman Sea (Phuket) and then visit the Gulf of Thailand. If you are lucky, by Christmas, the monsoon is over, and you will also have great weather on Koh Tao with little rain.

Weather in Central Thailand and Bangkok

Central Thailand: Bangkok, Koh Chang, Ayutthaya, River Kwai.

Here in Central Thailand, there are only two main seasons: the dry and rainy season. The best time to visit the Bangkok region is from November to May. From March to May, it is quite mild, while from June to October, it is rainy season.

The temperatures in and around Bangkok are relatively constant throughout the year, between 32° - 34° C.

From March to May in Bangkok, it is not only humid but also very hot. Temperatures over 40 degrees and high humidity are not uncommon.

The months of October to February are therefore the most popular. Once again, peak travel time with higher prices.

Rainy season here is from April to October, but it is rare to have several days of rain in a row.

When to Have a Beach Vacation in Thailand

If you just want to lie on the beach and not experience culture, the months of December - April during the dry season are the best for traveling to Thailand. But especially in December and January, many Europeans escape the winter temperatures, making it peak season in Thailand.

Even in the hottest months of the year, March and April, Thailand is suitable for beach holidays and island hopping.

Best Time for a Tour

If you are a fan of tours (I certainly am), you will probably travel to several regions. Then it's important to check exactly when rainy seasons occur. Alternatively, you can remain flexible and plan spontaneously on-site. If it rains on the southeastern islands (for example, Koh Samui), then check if the weather is better in Koh Lanta and Koh Phi Phi.

If you don't feel like that and prefer to plan and book before your trip (which is good during certain travel times - especially in December), you should definitely travel during the dry season from November to March.

As mentioned earlier, you can generally travel to Thailand all year round. It is generally cooler in the north. I prefer to travel during the off-season when there are often great deals on flight tickets, and hotels often have special offers.

Rainy Season in Thailand - What Does It Mean for Your Trip?

Between June and October, it is rainy season in Thailand. As mentioned before, this doesn't mean it rains all day during the rainy season. Often the rain showers are very heavy but brief (about one to two hours a day). Or it may rain heavily all night, and by the next morning everything is over, with the sun shining as if nothing ever happened.

The only inconvenient aspect of the rainy season is the high humidity, which can rise to 90%. This feels particularly extreme in Bangkok.

Shortly before and after it looks like this:

Traveling to Bangkok and Central Thailand During Rainy Season?

In Bangkok, the rainy season falls in September and October. The rain is not as heavy and lasts not as long as in Koh Samui or Koh Phangan. As early as June - July, you must expect brief rainfalls and thunderstorms. The positive aspect: It is not as muggy and hot as in the months of December - April.

Traveling during the rainy season can even have advantages such as:

  • Fewer tourists (ok, Koh Phangan was deserted once during our visit)
  • Greater selection of accommodations
  • Accommodations are cheaper
  • Flights are cheaper

And in the evening, there is a beautiful sunset - it couldn't be more kitsch - just after it rained as if the world was about to end....

But traveling during the rainy season sometimes brings (not every year) disadvantages:

  • Widespread flooding can occur.
  • Landslides may also happen.

Both have the downside that traveling can be affected. The last major floods always occurred in December. This supports my theory that the seasons are shifting further back.
