Great Travel Blogs to Plan Your Trips
Do you use travel blogs for planning your trips? For me, they are alongside guidebooks the best choice when it comes to exploring a new destination! I often get asked where I find my travel inspiration or what sources I use for planning and researching a trip. I find the best information on travel blogs and in specialized travel forums when planning my trips.
I also like to refer to guidebooks. However, as big publishers slowly run out of money, these often become outdated or superficial.
I'm not a regular reader of travel blogs. For trip preparation, I specifically look for blogs that I know are well-acquainted with a country or city. They offer honest and authentic information.
It's also important nowadays that they have truly experienced what they write about.
Many only think about 'making money' and sit at a desk, copying from others and are unaware of what they are actually writing about because they haven't been there. I'm sorry if I'm shattering your illusion, but that is unfortunately the reality.
I've tried to categorize the blogs by type of travel, destinations, and medium (blog, YouTube, Instagram).
Note: The list is not complete; it only includes blogs that I found useful for my preparations and appreciate. Countries that I haven't traveled to logically are not included. The notes in parentheses next to the blogs indicate the countries where I see the bloggers as specialists. Of course, they have traveled to other countries and write about those as well.
Our blog is considered one of the most successful authentic travel blogs in the German-speaking world (with over 580,000 unique readers per month). But how many there actually are doesn't matter to us, because what we want is to explore the world! We are professional travel bloggers.
Why Travel Blogs for Inspiration?
Bloggers write about their experiences from a personal perspective. The reports are usually current and contain information that is often missing in guidebooks or has become outdated due to the print medium. Moreover, pictures and videos round out the travel reports and tips on blogs.
I hope you find lots of inspiration and useful tips for your trip on my travel blog.
Since I enjoy traveling and often do it for longer periods of time, I sometimes travel with other travel bloggers. They have just as crazy travel destinations as I do, where friends only roll their eyes ('Tajikistan... what? Where is that?').
Bloggers I Often Travel With
Therefore, here are my favorite travel bloggers, where you can also find reports on joint travels:
Black Dots White Spots: I went on an adventurous road trip in Uganda and Rwanda with Susi (and saw the mountain gorillas!). Together we have visited Alberta (Canada), Western Australia, Northern Territory, Florida (USA), Aruba, and Baden-Württemberg more than twice. More joint trips are already planned.
Puriy: I went on a road trip in Botswana (and Namibia) with Madlen for almost 4 weeks. She has also been with me in Tajikistan/Kyrgyzstan. She is particularly specialized in South America and Africa and has traveled to some countries there multiple times.
The Best Travel Blogs for Road Trips
I personally love road trips. They are the ultimate way for me to travel. You're independent of public transportation, can reach remote places, and have the flexibility to manage your time freely. Whether it's a rental car, off-road vehicle, or van. Here are my favorite blogs for road trips:
- Take an Advanture(Europe, Canada, and long-term van trips)
- Mighty Travelliers (including North and South America, Europe)
- Moose around the World (including Iceland, Scandinavia, South Africa, USA)
- Giraffe 13 (including Africa, Europe)
- Weltwunderer (including New Zealand, Japan)
- Genussbummler (including USA, Australia, New Zealand)
- Nordlandblog (Scandinavia)
Long-term Travel in a Camper:
- movin'n'groovin (long-term travelers in a camper van, including Europe, Florida)
- Take an adVANture (Elisa also writes about sustainable travel)
- Runterwegs (mainly long-term travel in Africa)
- Keine Eile
Travel Blogs for Worldwide Outdoor Adventures
I love traveling for adventure and action. Whether it's gorilla trekking in Uganda & Rwanda, hiking with crampons in a frozen canyon in Canada, or sandboarding in South Africa. The motto is: Explore actively around the world!
Whether mountain biking, diving, snorkeling, climbing, or hiking. I find inspiration for crazy adventures among others here:
- Out of Office (lots of outdoor and skiing)
- Life is a Trip (especially travels by motorcycle in Asia and South America)
- Pixelschmitt (similar interests as I do - except traveling by van, they haven't done that yet)
- Fräulein Draußen - Hiking alone through England, R E S P E K T! They now have a lot on bike-packing and trail running
- Abenteuer unterwegs (plus life in a van)
- Passenger on Earth - Great blog with many adventures
Travel Blogs for Africa
If you've been to Africa once, you always return. That's true. Therefore, I always feel drawn back to this continent. I've always found valuable tips from these blogs:
- puriy (I traveled with Madlen in Botswana and South Africa)
- wolkenweit - Seychelles blog
- Giraffe 13
Travel Blogs for Central and South America
These spots on Earth appeal to me particularly. Therefore, I will mostly explore South America in the near future. In Central America, I have traveled almost all the countries. You can find information here as well as on my blog:
- Info Peru (Nora currently lives back in Cusco and I also met her there)
- southtraveler.de travel blog for South America
- Back-packer.org
Travel Blogs for Asia
The most popular long-distance destinations for independent travelers and package tourists are in Southeast Asia. It's no wonder that there are many good blogs for these countries:
- Indojunkie - Find everything about Indonesia with Melissa
- Faszination Südostasien - Stefan provides a lot of information for all Southeast Asian countries
- Wanderweib - Japan blog by Tessa, who lives in Tokyo
Travel Blogs for Europe & City Trips
I love city trips. I particularly enjoy coastal cities, architectural masterpieces, and culinary highlights. Information about city trips can be found here, among others:
- Teilzeitreisender
- Sommertage
- Freibeuter Reisen - Barcelona & Costa Brava, as Nicole lives in Barcelona
- Travelita - Anita takes the most beautiful photos!
Travel Blogs for Traveling with Kids
Since I believe that one can travel a lot with children as well, here are the best blogs for traveling with kids. We now also have a section on Traveling with Children, taken over by Isa.
Travel Blogs with Specialized Topics
Here you will find blogs with a specialized topic that, in my opinion, didn't fit neatly into any category:
- Traveling with disability: Wheeliewonderlust - Kim travels the world while in a wheelchair and shows you that you can always experience adventures if you want to!
- Sustainable travel: Funkloch
- The world of filming locations: Filmtourismus
- Traveling alone as a woman: A world Kaleidoscope
- Traveling affordably as a backpacker: Flocblog
- Surfing: Surfnomade
- Kite surfing: Life Travellerz
- Cycling around the world: Biketour Global
- Traveling by motorcycle: How far can we go
