Boltenhagen Beach Resort

Boltenhagen, the Third Oldest Seaside Resort in Germany

After Heiligendamm and Travemünde, Boltenhagen is the third oldest seaside resort in Germany. This Baltic Sea resort is one of the most popular in Germany.

That's why a stop in Boltenhagen was a must on our Baltic Sea road trip. Here and in the surrounding area, there's plenty to explore. There are the cliffs as well as a pier and the beautiful beach at Boltenhagen Bay.

You can read my conclusion at the end of the article.

The Baltic Sea resort is located between the Hanseatic cities of Wismar and Lübeck. Ideal for going on an exploration tour away from the beach.

There's even more to explore in the surrounding area. That's why I've written down my best tips for Boltenhagen!

Enjoy reading!

Beach and Pier in Boltenhagen

The Baltic Sea beach in Boltenhagen is a whole 3.5 km long. Wow! Unfortunately, during our stay, the weather was quite variable and far from beach-friendly. However, we made the best of it and took long walks.

There is a nude beach section and also a dog beach. You can also rent beach chairs if you do not want to lie in the fine sand.

Did you know: During the GDR times, air mattresses were prohibited on the beach of Boltenhagen? They were seen as potential escape aids to the not-so-far West.

A pier is part of any Baltic Sea vacation. There is one in Boltenhagen, measuring 290 meters long. It's the main attraction for most tourists. However, there's a large construction site between the beach and the promenade. The promenade is currently being completely rebuilt on the dune.

In a year, it should look really nice since the walkway will then be elevated and made of wooden planks! Until then, it doesn't feel very cozy.

At the pier, boats depart to the island of Poel, to Wismar, Travemünde, and Timmendorf Beach. We visited these places during our stay in Wismar. You can find tips for the island of Poel here.

Boltenhagen Cliffs

A highlight in Boltenhagen is the cliffs, especially in sunny weather. photo by viel-unterwegs.de

The cliffs of Boltenhagen look like a miniature version of the Faroe Islands or a landscape section in Ireland from a distance. Wow. When the sun shines on the lush green fields on the cliffs, it looks stunning.

You can stroll along the cliffs below or walk or bike from above and enjoy the view from the top.

The problem with the Baltic Sea: Culinary options are often limited. But not at Café Lindquist, which we immediately fell in love with.

The food, drinks, and the entire decor: top-notch! We felt super comfortable here and recommend that you definitely visit Café Lindquist!

Tip: Try the licorice liqueur if you've never been to Finland.

The beach promenade and the middle promenade (between the beach and the main street) in Boltenhagen are particularly popular. Of course, here the promenade stretches about 3 km long. (Souvenir) shops, restaurants, and small cafés can be found here in abundance.

Some of the houses are built in the style of spa architecture. After reunification, some of these were renovated and now serve as holiday apartments, hotels, or restaurants. The prettiest ones are called 'Zur Düne,' 'Strandhaus,' 'Strandvilla Krabbe,' or Villa Charlotte. Usually, there are plaques with information and photos about their history in front of them.

If you're a fan of spa architecture, you should visit Binz and Sellin on the island of Rügen or the Kaiserbäder on Usedom.

At the height of the pier is the spa park, where regular events and concerts take place.

Weiße Wiek Yacht World

We feel like we're in Scandinavia as we see the red fishing huts at Weiße Wiek, the 'marina' in Boltenhagen. The yacht harbor borders the district of Tarnewitz. Here you can find hotels, holiday apartments, restaurants, and, of course, boat docks.

There is also a diving base where you can even get your diving certification. However, I doubt you'll have much 'visibility' underwater.

Aside from the red huts, we found it less exciting here. However, it's perfect for a stroll and easily reachable from Boltenhagen.

Klützer Winkel

In no other region along the Baltic Sea are there as many manors and castles as around the dreamy town of Klütz. Schloss Bothmer, Gutshaus Redewisch, and Schloss Kalkhorst are just three of them.

By the way, Schloss Bothmer has often been used as a film set. The garden was designed in the English style. The castle complex is the largest baroque complex in all of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Unfortunately, the weather messed up our planned visit. The trip literally got washed away. I still wanted to share this tip with you. We drove through Klütz again on our journey but unfortunately couldn't stop. I found the town somewhat charming and would have liked to see more of it.

Excursion Destination Wismar

If you're in Boltenhagen, you should visit the most beautiful of all Hanseatic cities: Wismar! Since we spent a few days in Wismar, you'll find here a detailed report on Wismar and the island of Poel.

Tips for Boltenhagen

Camping in Boltenhagen

If we had looked properly, we should have chosen the Regenbogen Campsite in Boltenhagen. Instead, we relied on a camper guide that recommended the Banana Jack Camper Site (which has a bar).

Don't get me wrong: Everything was clean and the location was great. But: You were packed in here like sardines, the camping site was too cramped for us. Since we had already had a great experience with Regenbogen in Rügen (Nonnevitz), we would have chosen this nature campsite in the woods.

Tip for a Holiday Apartment

We were traveling in Boltenhagen with a camper van. But during our exploration, we saw these small houses in Redewisch that reminded me of my childhood in the Black Forest. So cozy.

That's why I would recommend this accommodation if you are not arriving with a camper. The location is ideal and almost by the cliffs.

Here are our tips for delicious food in Boltenhagen. As mentioned, there isn't much, and in the camper van, we often prepared our own meals.

  • Good ice cream shop with Italian ice at the water gate: Eiscafé Da Ricardo
  • Best fish sandwich: Fischer un sin Fruh
  • A small snack and local produce can be found at the organic bakery. Every day at Dünenweg on the way to the cliffs.
  • Café Einraum and Café La Dolce Vita for ice cream. Pay attention to the opening hours. Many cafés along the Baltic Sea close by 6 PM.

Travel Guide

For Boltenhagen itself, there is no travel guide. We bought the Wochenender for the Baltic Sea before our trip. This is not a typical travel guide but shares personal tips and favorite spots from the authors. In it, we discovered great cafés, shops, and places.

Conclusion on Boltenhagen

I confess: Upon arrival and driving through the main street to the camper site, I felt uneasy. There were crowds of people, and at the camper sites (regardless of which), you were packed in closely, more like sardines in a can. Unfortunately, that's not my style at all.

Additionally, I found the construction site at the beach very distracting. I found many other places along the Baltic Sea much prettier and more idyllic. The island of Rügen, Zingst, Darß, Börgerende, or even the island of Poel.

There are beautiful spots, and I really liked the cliffs. However, for my next vacation along the Baltic Sea, I would prefer the other places.
