I've traveled the Cape Peninsula 5 times: Here are the sights (with tips)
The Cape Peninsula in South Africa offers an ideal day trip with numerous highlights between Muizenberg Beach and Hout Bay, featuring penguins and the Cape of Good Hope.
For me, the most beautiful places are the colorful beach huts in Muizenberg, tidal pools at St. James, seals in Kalk Bay, penguins in Simon's Town, the Cape of Good Hope, and Chapman's Peak Drive.
The best way to explore the Cape Peninsula is by renting a car. You'll be flexible and can stop wherever you like.
For the main attractions, one day is sufficient. For a better experience, plan at least two days for the Cape Peninsula and the Cape of Good Hope.
Plan your day trip so that you can visit one of the markets in Hout Bay or Noordhoek. The most beautiful beach along the route is in Llandudno, between Hout Bay and Cape Town.
Here are my highlights with activities and tours that I recommend. Packed with tips and information, in sequential order!
At the end of the article, I'll provide useful tips to help you plan your trip. This will prepare you for all the highlights of the Cape Peninsula. Read on to see my frequently visited places, attractions, and insider tips.

What must be seen on the Cape Peninsula?
In order of highlights along the road trip from Cape Town along the Cape Peninsula:
Muizenberg Beach
St. James (beach huts and tidal pool)
Kalk Bay
Fish Hoek
Glencairn
Penguins at Boulders Beach (Simon's Town)
Cape of Good Hope / Cape Point in the Table Mountain National Park
Chapman's Peak Drive
Scarborough & Misty Cliffs
Kommetjie
Noordhoek
Hout Bay
Llandudno
How much time to plan for the Cape Peninsula?
For the main attractions, you should plan a full day for the Cape Peninsula. Two days are more relaxed, as you can spend an entire day just at the Cape of Good Hope and the highlights in the national park, if you wish.
Tips for your road trip along the Cape Peninsula
Start as early as possible in the morning to avoid crowds. Especially in January, when it's summer vacation in South Africa.
Start with the penguins in Simon's Town to save time.
Check on this website if Chapman's Peak Drive is open.
Attractions of the Cape Peninsula in Order
The Cape Peninsula offers numerous highlights. Allocate at least a full day for exploration. Depart early in the morning. Here are the key attractions and places worth stopping at, in order of driving direction.
1. Muizenberg
We always enjoy driving the loop from Cape Town via the Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden, Constantia to Muizenberg into False Bay, which is my favorite route.
Enjoy the panoramic views and stop to take in the sights.
At Muizenberg Beach, you'll find the famous, colorfully painted wooden bathhouses. But beware: at the bathing park with the tube slides, you'll find the 'real' bathhouses famous from photographs of Muizenberg.
The beach is especially popular with surfers. Behind the parking lot at the beach, you'll find some small restaurants for a snack.
Note: Starting February 2025, Muizenberg Beach will undergo extensive redevelopment: a wide, barrier-free promenade path, new beach huts in a historic style, and modernized sanitary and recreational facilities are planned. While construction is expected to last until the end of 2026, the beach will remain accessible, although there will be restrictions on parking and access.
Food tip:
Kauai: Porridge, healthy juices, smoothies, salads, wraps (website)
Tigers Milk: From breakfast with Eggs Benedict to burgers and pizza, everything is available here (website)
Hudsons - the Burger Joint. Delicious burgers, also vegan (website)
Lucky Fish & Chips. Greasy but good (website, also available in St. James)
2. St. James
St. James also has colorful bathhouses like Muizenberg. However, it is much less crowded here. They are located by the St. James train station at the northern end of the quaint town at St. James Beach.
In addition, there are tidal pools where kids can have a great time. You can find more of these pools along the Cape Peninsula. Just keep reading.
3. Kalk Bay
Kalk Bay is a small fishing village with nice swimming and surfing beaches. Here you'll also find tidal pools by the sea: The Dalebrook Tidal Pool.
In Kalk Bay, you should plan at least one more stop: at Olympia Café. The staff might not always be friendly and can sometimes snap at customers, but they have the absolute best chocolate croissants in and around Cape Town!
On the drive from Muizenberg to Kalk Bay, you have two route options. Straight along the coast or via Boyes Drive for higher views.
On Boyes Drive, you might encounter the guards at Shark Spotters Lookout Points who look out for sharks (which no longer appear here). Along the coastal road are tidal pools and Olympia Café. Additionally, in Kalk Bay by the harbor, you can find some seals that love to lounge in the sun or splash around in the harbor basin.
More snack tips:
Kalkys Fish and Chips
Harbour House Restaurant
4. Fish Hoek
Fish Hoek is also a small fishing village with a beach for surfing and swimming. The Jager Walk Beach is especially suitable for families. We usually just pass through this area to the next highlight.
5. Glencairn
In the next suburb of Cape Town at False Bay, there's only one place worth stopping: The Glencairn Tidal Pool.
6. Penguins at Boulders Beach (Simon's Town)
Tourists primarily stop in Simon's Town for the penguins. It's one of the main attractions on the Cape Peninsula, alongside the Cape of Good Hope.
The beach is on the way to the Cape of Good Hope and is about a 40-minute drive from Cape Town's city center. It is part of the Table Mountain National Park.
Tip for visiting the penguins:
Come early in the morning when it's not too crowded. Parking fills up quickly. I've written my tips for visiting in this article: Penguins at Boulders Beach in Simon's Town.
Info: If it's too crowded here, head to Betty's Bay, located 90 km away on the Whale Coast Route. There are far fewer tourists here, and admission costs the equivalent of just 1 Euro.
7. Cape of Good Hope in the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve
The Cape of Good Hope was declared a national park back in 1939. With approximately 8,000 hectares, what was once the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve is now part of the Table Mountain National Park, encompassing the entire southern tip of the Cape Peninsula.
Since the highlight is one of the most famous attractions in South Africa, and I have been here multiple times, I've written a separate article on visiting the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point.
8. Chapman's Peak Drive
The dream road along the coast with 114 curves
Chapman's Peak Drive is considered one of the most beautiful coastal roads in the world - but also one of the most dangerous. A toll fee is charged to drive at 'Chappies,' as the locals call Chapman's Peak. Unless you ride a bicycle.
This toll is well-spent: You'll be rewarded with great views. It is no wonder that numerous commercials have been filmed here. You'll take on 114 curves along the nine-kilometer stretch between Hout Bay and Noordhoek.
Only a small wall separates the road from the abyss. I advise you to adhere to the speed limit of 40 km/h. The road is dangerous, and otherwise, you won't be able to enjoy the views of the Atlantic Ocean on the left and the mountains on the right.
The best views are on the drive from Hout Bay to Noordhoek. As South Africa drives on the left, you can better stop at the viewpoint parking lots and simply drive left out.
Alternative to the car: Ride a vintage racing bike along Chapman's Peak Drive!
Special tip: Take a tour with an ex-pro in vintage racing bikes over the 114 curves. He will adjust the distance and speed according to ability. Anyone can participate. You can enjoy the views even better by bike than by car.

Information on Chapman's Peak Drive:
The one-way fare is 47 Rand per car. Note: Only South African credit cards are accepted, so bring enough cash with you.
Website for Chapman's Peak Drive - check the website for updates about the road. Sometimes the drive is closed due to construction, rockfalls, rain, or strong winds.
9. Scarborough & Misty Cliffs
Small, exclusive vacation homes and a beautiful beach can be found in Scarborough. The Misty Cliffs live up to their name. The mist often rises like a veil, giving everything a mystical feel.
Take a break and enjoy a coffee at "The Hub Café".
10. Kommetjie
The quaint little town is primarily known for many in Cape Town owning a little vacation home on the beach. I would never have thought to visit this town. But here in one of the beach houses, "The Best Day" with Matthias Schweighöfer and Florian David Fitz was filmed. I was on a special trip with one of the directors here and got to see the filming locations.
Here in Kommetjie is Mona's Beach House. In a wonderful beach location with a view of the sea surrounded by sand dunes. The house is privately owned.
11. Noordhoek
From the Chapman's Peak Drive viewpoint, you have the best view of the 8 km long Noordhoek Beach. It is one of the most beautiful and longest stretches of beach on the Cape Peninsula. This beach is particularly known for horseback riding along the shore.
However, you can also take a beach walk on the usually windy beach.
You can rent horses here
Our tip: Enjoy dinner and a cocktail at Monkey Valley Resort while watching the sunset over the sea.
More tips:
Kirsten's Kick Ass Ice Cream. Very delicious ice cream.
The Foodbarn, Noordhoek Farm Village: Ideal for lunch or dinner. There are also other nice little shops around.
12. Hout Bay
Hout Bay is the next highlight. It is right at the end - or beginning of Chapman's Peak Drive. The long sandy beaches and local places where you can eat with the best views at sunset are particularly worth seeing.
At the harbor, you can take boat tours to see the seals on Seal Island (book here at Get Your Guide). Due to rabies issues with the seals here, snorkeling tours have been suspended.
Bay Harbour Market in Hout Bay
This market is considered one of the most beautiful markets around Cape Town. The formerly rundown harbor attracts thousands of visitors every weekend. There are many food stalls, drinks, clothing, and souvenirs. Live music is also played.
The market is open Fridays from 5 PM to 9 PM and Saturday - Sunday from 9:30 AM - 4 PM.
Another tip for Hout Bay:
For sunset: The Dunes Restaurant is right on the beach. Even though the food isn't the best.
La Cuccina
13. Llandudno
If you're wondering where the most beautiful beach in Cape Town is? No, not in Camps Bay. I find it terrible there, as you lie towel to towel. The most beautiful beach on the Cape Peninsula is located in Llandudno. Stop by, it's worth it!

Clothing and Supplies
Pack enough water. The sun is often underestimated due to the light wind that always blows. We also recommend sunscreen with SPF 50 and a head covering. Caution: Hold on tight at the Cape of Good Hope!

Road Closures
Check before departure on this website if Chapman's Peak Drive is open. Depending on the travel season, the road may be closed due to strong winds.
Where to Stay
Cape Town has always served as our base. I've often thought about living at Bloubergstrand or in Hout Bay. However, I love Cape Town so much that I haven't been able to bring myself to book accommodations along the Cape Peninsula so far.
Safety
As I've mentioned before, I've never felt unsafe in Cape Town and the Western Cape. I have more fear and respect for baboons at the Cape of Good Hope and in Simon's Town than for theft. Nonetheless, you'll find everything I've learned about safety in South Africa here.
However, you should follow these tips:
Don't leave anything visible in your car. Keep everything in the trunk, and preferably don't carry valuables.
Don't openly display your expensive jewelry. I haven't worn jewelry on my many trips to Africa for security reasons. Why would I?
Before any hikes (especially at sunrise), inform yourself thoroughly about the safety situation.
Lock your car when entering the Cape of Good Hope National Park. Why? The baboons can open cars very well. I've seen them do it with other tourists ahead of us. Also, close the windows. The aggressive monkeys can reach inside. And please DO NOT FEED THEM! We recently saw tourists happily taking pictures because they were feeding the baboons nuts.
Best Travel Time
The best time to visit the Cape Peninsula is during the German winter. The sea in False Bay is warm enough for swimming and surfing then. Winds are not as strong as in July-August or April.
However, the Cape Peninsula is a year-round travel destination. It never gets really cold.

Conclusion for the Cape Peninsula
One day at the Cape Peninsula is way too short. Nevertheless, the tour provides a great insight into the region. One highlight follows another. Whether it's penguins (my favorite, which is why I have a penguin tattoo), picturesque bays, or rugged coasts. I love the Cape Peninsula and Cape Town so much that I keep coming back.
The easiest way is to drive with your rental car. Although the hop-on hop-off bus covers most places, this way you're the most flexible. Stops at Chapman's Peak Drive or along the coast won't be possible otherwise.
You'll experience Chapman's Peak Drive particularly intensely with a bike. The penguins during the kayak tour, whose funds go to the NGO for penguin protection.
The Cape Peninsula is one of the most beautiful places and absolute highlights in South Africa!
