Tested and Recommended: These City Tours & Sightseeing Walks in Copenhagen Come Highly Recommended
Before traveling to cities like Copenhagen, we check at Get Your Guide for cool activities and alternative city tours to reserve tickets for popular activities in advance. This way, we avoid the stress of fully booked tours or knowing whether they only operate on certain days.
For Copenhagen, I always buy the Copenhagen Card. If it rains, you can spontaneously enter any participating museum or castle. Genius and money-saving. Here we've summarized our city tours in Copenhagen. The following city walks come highly recommended; they are worth it.
Have fun exploring!
Explore Copenhagen's Culinary Scene
As part of the Copenhagen Food Tour with Foodtours, you not only learn a lot about Denmark's capital, but you also explore Copenhagen through a culinary city walk. The starting point is in the Torvehallerne near Nørreport Station. After a stroll through the market halls, we continue to the Botanical Garden and various other restaurants that we would have visited anyway.
You'll learn where to find the best hot dogs and the best Smørrebrød during the food tour. Of course, you will also pass by some sights and attractions of Denmark's capital. We don't want to give away more; you should experience this walk yourself.
At first glance, the tour seems quite expensive. However, anyone who knows how pricey Copenhagen is will find that the price of 900 DKK is reasonable after the tour. We enjoyed the best Smørrebrød and also tasted a hot dog. We sampled honey from the city's bees and tried the best cheese and licorice at the market. We even tasted candy from a factory and tried beer from the only brewery in the city center.

- Start: 10:30 AM at Torvehallerne
Sightseeing by Boat
You can best discover the city of Copenhagen from a different perspective on a canal tour by boat. You can relax on the water and pass by all of the sights. Watching the crowds at the Little Mermaid from the water is priceless.
Among the offered boat tours, you can choose between three routes: Blue, Red, and Yellow. I took the yellow route on my first visit, but this one does not include Nyhavn. Dom purchased the combo ticket with Tivoli on his recent visit and did the blue/red tour from Nyhavn. Both tours are highly recommended. You have a tough choice ahead of you.
The best part about the canal tour: It's free with the Copenhagen Card! As a holder, you can choose one of the tours. There is also a live audio commentary in Danish and English, sometimes in German as well.
More information about the canal tour:
- Three routes are available
- Duration: 1 hour, regular departures (note different docks for the boats)
- Buy tickets in advance, as many visitors love this activity, so there are often no spots available last minute
- Combo ticket for the canal tour and Tivoli (we booked this for a friend who didn't want to participate in the food tour)
Alternatives:
Tours with Hey Captain depart from Ofelia Plads at the Copenhagen Opera House. These tours were suggested to us, but unfortunately, we didn't have time for them this time. They are rated number 1 on Tripadvisor.
There are three different tours:
- Sights: 1 hour, 200 DKK (presumably the same sights as on the Strömma tours)
- Hidden Gems: 2 hours, 400 DKK
- "The Diana": 5 hours, 1300 DKK per person
Or rent your own boat with GoBoat to cruise through the canals. You'll receive just a brief introduction and don't need a boating license.
Copenhagen Street Art Tour
You can find street art in many corners of Copenhagen. Often hidden and not too numerous, especially not in the city center. You'll find a lot of art on the walls, for instance, in Christiania. Also at Superkilen Park and Banana Park (a little outside the center).
Check the map at the end of the article. We've marked the artworks with the icon of a color palette.
Bike Tour in the Bicycle Capital of Europe
Copenhagen is truly a biking city. Therefore, we recommend exploring Copenhagen by bike. On the 3-hour guided bike tour, you'll learn a lot about the history of the city, Amalienborg Palace, Christiansborg Palace, the Little Mermaid, and Frederiks Kirke.
You'll reach the sights, get some tips away from the tourist crowds, and best of all: the culinary recommendations from local guides.
That's why the guided bike tour in Copenhagen is perfect for getting a good overview of the city. Thanks to the great bike lanes, it's really fun to "bike" your way through the city during a city trip.
You can also ride around Copenhagen on your own. We did this on other days, as bikes from providers like Donkey are available everywhere, which you can rent and return through an app. It's that easy.
Just Here for a Short Time? Hop-on Hop-off Bus Tour
Are you just in Copenhagen for a short time? Explore Copenhagen's attractions at your own pace with a 72-hour hop-on/hop-off bus ticket. On the tour, where you can get on and off anywhere, you'll get a quick overview of the city. Thanks to the open upper deck, you'll have the perfect panoramic view of the attractions in Copenhagen.
Excursion to Malmö & Lund
If you're staying longer in Copenhagen, I strongly recommend taking a tour over the Øresund Bridge to the neighboring country of Sweden. Malmö and Lund are two great cities that you can explore either independently (with excellent train connections) or as part of a 6-hour tour with a guided city tour. I was really impressed with both Lund and Malmö.
- You can book the excursion here or travel independently by train from Copenhagen Central Station over the Øresund Bridge to Malmö and Lund.
- In my travel report for Malmö, you can see all the landmarks and highlights in the city.
- You can find pictures and tips for Lund in my report about the North Cape with a camper.
More Sightseeing Tips
Here we've summarized some tips for exploring Copenhagen. In this article, I'll show you how to ideally explore Copenhagen in three days (with suggested itinerary).
Planning Tips and Saving Money
Cities like Copenhagen can be visited spontaneously and without a plan. However, you shouldn't do this primarily in the summer. Why? Many other tourists have the same goal as you: to discover Copenhagen and the sights! It will be crowded.
1. Make a Plan for Sightseeing and Buy Tickets in Advance
If you're visiting Copenhagen for the first time, you might not know where to go first. To avoid wandering aimlessly from A to B, we've gathered these travel tips for visitors to Copenhagen. This way, you can best recognize what you can see in one day and which highlights are close to each other. Copenhagen isn't very large; many sights can be reached by bike, e-scooter, metro, bus, boat, or on foot. By the way, you can check out my 3-day Copenhagen itinerary.
For your convenience, we have included a map at the end of the article. In this map, we've marked all the Vienna sights and our highlights away from the crowds in Copenhagen, along with other places we visited and restaurant tips. Open this on your phone to see at a glance where the next hotspot is.
For most tours and sights in Copenhagen, you can get tickets cheaper if you book them online prior to your trip. Or you can buy the Copenhagen Card (my tip).
For popular restaurants (Noma), you must book a table at least six months before your trip.
2. Save Time and Money with Sightseeing Passes
Do you want to experience a lot and visit museums as well as the main attractions? Perhaps also explore a tour or other highlights? Then buy the Copenhagen Card.
With the Copenhagen Card, you get free admission to over 80 attractions.
Here you can read about our experience with the Copenhagen Card.
