Here you will find travel tips & reports for your vacation in Croatia
What do you associate with a vacation in Croatia? Beautiful beaches, exciting landscapes, and delicious food? We love the versatility of Croatia. It's perfect for a road trip or a beach holiday. By the way, Croatia is an EU country, so you can conveniently enter with just your ID card.
Here are our best tips for the most beautiful islands, national parks, and cities.

Travel Tips for Croatia
- Croatia has about 4.06 million inhabitants
- Capital: Zagreb (approximately 790,000 inhabitants)
- Currency: Euro
- About 1,244 islands, the largest being Krk and Cres. Approximately 67 are inhabited.
- Official language: Croatian, with various local dialects. In the Istrian Peninsula, Italian is also spoken. In tourist regions, German or English is often spoken. To learn essential phrases in the local language, I use the Babbel App before traveling.
- Neighboring countries: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, Slovenia, and Hungary
Entry Requirements
Croatia is a member of the EU, so as a German citizen, you can enter with your ID card and do not need a passport.
Money and Currency
As of January 1, 2023, the Euro (EUR) is the only official currency in Croatia, replacing the former Kuna.
Currently, the best free credit cards for travel are the DKB Bank Debit Card, GenialCard (Hanseatic Bank), and the Mastercard Gold from TF Bank. With a setup of at least 2 of these cards, you can almost always withdraw money for free from ATMs abroad and pay on-site without incurring foreign transaction fees!

The Different Regions of Croatia
- Istria
- Kvarner Bay
- Plitvice Lakes (the oldest national park in Europe, since 1949)
- Dinaric Alps
- Makarska Riviera
Getting There by Car or Motorhome
You are most flexible if you travel by your own car. If traveling with children, it may also be worthwhile to fly and rent a car locally. If you want to explore the countryside a bit, you definitely need a car.
The drive by car from Munich to Istria takes about 7 - 8 hours. Remember that you will need to pay tolls in Austria, Slovenia, and Croatia. Maybe you would like to stop in Graz? It's worth taking a break for a night.
You can fly directly to Croatia from many airports in the United States. Flights can be quite affordable. The main airports in Croatia are in Split, Dubrovnik, Zagreb, Zadar, Pula, and Rijeka.
Best Travel Time for Croatia
Croatia is characterized by three climate zones: continental, alpine, and Mediterranean.
Around the sea, there is a Mediterranean climate with dry and warm summers. It rains a lot in autumn, and winters on the coast are mild.
I generally recommend traveling in May, June, September, and October. From May, water temperatures rise to 20° C and remain steady at 20 - 24° C until the end of September, which is ideal for swimming in the sea.
July and August are extremely popular months on the Croatian coast. Be sure to book in advance if you want to secure a spot with a motorhome or tent.
Recommended Travel Guides for Croatia
For your trip to Croatia, we recommend the following travel guides that we have used and tested. Almost all are from the Michael Müller Verlag. We found it practical that there are individual guides for different regions. If you're only traveling to one area, you don't have to carry a thick book.
- Croatian Islands and Coastal Cities (Michael Müller Verlag)
- Special Guide: Wild Swimming Croatia and Slovenia. Discover the most beautiful springs, rivers, waterfalls, lakes, and beaches in Croatia & Slovenia
- Northern Croatia Travel Guide: individual travel - Kvarner Bay, Central Croatia, Slavonia (Michael Müller Verlag)
- Istria Travel Guide (also Michael Müller Verlag)
