The diverse, vibrant, and sometimes overwhelming India is a destination that not everyone has on their list. Once there, you are either completely enchanted or put off. Some rave about this multifaceted country - I count myself among them - while others find it dreadful. The contrasts between rich and poor are stark. Noise, poverty, waste, and all the smells that come with it are ever-present.

However, exciting traditions, colorful festivals, a variety of activities, and unique architecture attract millions of tourists from around the world to India every year. A trip to India is undoubtedly an unforgettable experience. Whether it's visiting a major city, relaxing on the beach, or exploring impressive palaces, temples, and the incredibly beautiful Taj Mahal - the highlights are unique. The country is far too vast to explore in just one trip. Therefore, here you'll find our experiences and tips about India. From applying for your visa to planning your journey. Enjoy!

Hi, I'm Katrin and I traveled through Northern India and Southern Goa in 4 weeks. I explored the 'Golden Triangle' with the Taj Mahal, went in search of tigers, and relaxed by the sea in Goa.

I visited the cities of Delhi, Jaipur, Udaipur, and Agra. Now I want to explore more of India. There are still some highlights missing, such as Mumbai, Varanasi, Kerala, the Himalayan regions, and the Andaman Islands.

Highlights in India

  • Taj Mahal in Rajasthan
  • Varanasi, the city of pilgrims
  • Kerala Backwaters in Southern India
  • Experience Bengal Tigers in the wild, e.g., in Ranthambore National Park (Rajasthan)
  • Sandy beaches in Goa or Kerala
  • Bustling metropolises Mumbai and Delhi

There are so many more highlights and places that should be seen. I still have many of them on my list.

India in Brief

  • Population: about 1.43 billion
  • Capital: New Delhi
  • Currency: Indian Rupee (Rs)
  • Time difference: +4.5 hours or +3.5 hours (European Summer Time)

Best Travel Time

The best travel time for India depends on which regions you plan to visit. The climate in North India is subtropical, with significant temperature differences. In summer, it is hot, humid, and the monsoon brings rain at intervals.

In winter (from November), it becomes drier and more pleasant.

  • The best travel time for North India is from November to February.
  • For the region around the Himalayas, the ideal travel time is between June and September. This window is quite short, but it is very dry and pleasantly warm at around 20 degrees Celsius.
  • West India is best visited from October to March.
  • The monsoon in Goa ends in early August. From then on, it gets better day by day, and humidity decreases. November to January are peak travel times here. Before that, many restaurants and accommodations are closed. Those that are open are generally cheaper.
