Everything You Need to Know Before Your Trip to Malaysia

The country of Malaysia is located in Southeast Asia and is divided into two main parts. The mainland section borders Thailand to the south, while the northern part is on an island shared with Indonesia: Borneo. It is home to orangutans and other endangered species.

Highlights include the capital Kuala Lumpur, as well as Borneo and Langkawi. The mix of urban and jungle environments, along with stunning beaches, is a reason why you must travel to Malaysia.

Travel Tips for Malaysia

Here are a few things I've summarized that are useful for your travel planning.

Things You Should Know

  • Malaysia has 32.37 million inhabitants
  • The capital of Malaysia is Kuala Lumpur
  • The official language is Malay
  • The country borders Thailand and has maritime borders with Indonesia, Singapore and Vietnam
  • Currency: Malaysian Ringgit (MYR)
  • Time difference: + 6 hours (summer)

Money and Currency

The official currency of Malaysia is the Malaysian Ringgit. You can get about 4.8 Ringgit (RM) for 1 Euro. It's best to download a currency conversion app on your phone, or use 5 as a rough exchange rate.

I do not exchange money in Germany before the trip, as it only ends up costing a lot in fees. I always withdraw a small amount in local currency at the ATM when I arrive so I have cash on hand. You should be aware that there are also credit cards that charge no fees for withdrawals or payments abroad.

Currently, the best free credit cards for travel are the DKB Bank Debit Card, GenialCard (Hanseatic Bank), and the TF Bank Mastercard Gold. With a setup of at least 2 of these cards, you can almost always withdraw money for free from ATMs abroad and pay on-site without incurring foreign transaction fees! -> Here you can find all my tips and experiences for the best travel credit cards in comparison.

Best Time to Visit Malaysia

There is no best time to visit Malaysia, as different regions have different monsoon seasons. However, the country can be visited year-round; you just need to choose the right region.

Borneo and the East Coast of Malaysia

The best time to visit is during the summer months from November to March. This is when it rains the least, and you can relax on the beach, dive, or hike.

West Coast of Malaysia

The West Coast is ideal to visit at any time of the year. However, the best months are from November to March. Especially for a beach vacation, the weather is the best and driest then.
