How Much Does a Vacation in Mexico Cost? The Complete List & Prices of Our 3-Week Mexico Tour

Mexico is becoming an increasingly popular and interesting travel destination for backpackers and independent travelers. Package tourism has long been available, especially around the stunning beaches of Cozumel, Cancun, and Playa del Carmen.

If you're looking for a complete breakdown of costs for a vacation in Mexico, you've come to the right place! Here, we will list everything from flight prices to food and activities. We took three weeks to travel around Mexico, and we want to share our costs with you so that you have an idea of what your trip might cost.

Please note that these prices may vary depending on travel dates and preferences.

How Much Does a Vacation in Mexico Cost?

The costs of daily life can vary greatly within the country. Generally, they are higher than the standards of other Latin American countries. Mexico is also more expensive than Thailand.

If you're also considering taking a trip to Mexico, I've summarized the costs of my Mexico tour and compared them with friends. This way, you can have a rough idea of how much budget you'll need for your Mexico trip, depending on how you travel.

My experience is based on three weeks of backpacking travel. Our transfers consisted of local buses, long-distance buses, and ferries or boats. We did not fly within the country and also did not rent a car in Yucatan.

General Information on Mexico as a Travel Destination

1. Save by Choosing Package Deals or Booking Individually?

When planning a trip to Mexico, there are many package deals available that can help you get the most out of your travel experience.

Popular Mexico travel packages often include all-inclusive offerings, typically covering accommodation, flight, meals, and some activities.

If you prefer more flexibility in your travel planning and budget, you could opt for a more flexible package that only includes your flight and some suggested activities or attractions.

Additionally, you can find specific Mexico travel packages tailored to interests like food, history, or adventure. Whatever type of Mexico vacation package you choose, there are surely countless exciting experiences waiting for you in this beautiful and diverse country.

So why not start planning your next Mexico adventure today? You'll surely have an unforgettable time!

We only needed the outbound and return flights. For that, we booked the first and last accommodation. Everything else we decided on the spot since we didn't want to pre-book everything. Sure, that could have been cheaper at some points, but it was okay for us.

2. Flight Prices to Mexico City and Cancun

If you're thinking about a trip to Mexico, you might be wondering how much it costs to fly there from the United States. The good news is that depending on your departure location and airport, there are several affordable flight rates available.

A round trip from New York to Mexico City typically costs around $700, while a flight from Los Angeles to Cancun can be found for as low as $500. Of course, prices vary depending on the season and airline you choose, so you should always compare prices before booking. But with a little planning, you can easily find flights that fit both your schedule and your budget.

Here are my tips on how to book flights.

3. Hotel Prices in Different Regions of Mexico

When it comes to finding a good deal on a hotel in Mexico, various factors can impact the price. For example, hotel prices in popular destinations like Cancun and Playa del Carmen tend to be higher due to high demand.

In contrast, hotels in more remote areas are usually much cheaper, as they are less frequented and don't offer as many amenities (like Palenque, San Cristobal de las Casas).

Additionally, there may be increased prices in hotels throughout the country during certain seasons when many people flock to the beaches or travel during holiday periods. The best way to find a good deal for a Mexican accommodation is to do your research and compare prices in different regions to find out where you get the most value for your money.

With careful planning and flexibility in your schedule, you can enjoy a wonderful trip without breaking the bank. I always search for good accommodations on booking.com, Tripadvisor, and sometimes on Airbnb.

5. Activities and Excursions You Can Do During Your Stay in Mexico

There are countless activities and excursions you can do during your stay in Mexico. Whether you want to immerse yourself in the rich culture of this vibrant country, experience an exciting adventure, or simply relax and soak up the sun-there's something for everyone in Mexico. Popular activities include hiking through breathtaking natural landscapes, snorkeling at colorful coral reefs, tasting delicious local cuisine, and exploring ancient Mayan ruins in Chichen Itza, Tulum, Palenque, and many other sites.

Of course, many of these activities can be quite expensive. However, there are also plenty of affordable options for those looking to have a budget-friendly vacation. For example, if you want to relax, you can treat yourself to a massage or join a yoga class at one of the many spas in Mexico.

If you are interested in nature, there are many state and national parks where you can hike and camp all day without spending much money. If you just want to have fun, there are lively street festivals and celebrations occurring all year round throughout Mexico that provide entertainment without the need to spend much.

Regardless of your budget or travel preferences, there's something exciting waiting for you in Mexico!

We never skimp on our travels because we always tell ourselves: Will we ever come back? Because the world is just too big to visit places multiple times. Although it does happen, it's not very often.

Tips for Saving on Your Mexico Vacation

If you're planning a trip to Mexico, there are several ways to save money while you're on the go. For starters, it's important to set a realistic budget and stick to it. This helps you prioritize your spending and prevents you from overspending on unnecessary things or activities.

It's also a good idea to plan as much as possible in advance. For example, if you book your flight or accommodation early, you can benefit from early bird discounts and other offers that may not be available later.

Plus, you should look out for the best travel offers and research the cost of living in the area to ensure you get the most bang for your buck.

It might also be worthwhile for you to collect points with the Amex Platinum Card to use for accommodations (upgrades or free nights?). Here's my experience report on the American Express Platinum Card (which is really not suitable for everyone).

By keeping these simple tips in mind, your Mexico vacation can be more affordable than ever!

Example Budget for a 3-Week Trip to Mexico

When planning a trip to Mexico, it's important to consider your budget and stay within your financial means. This may involve researching the best deals for flights, accommodations, food, and activities in advance.

For example, we prefer direct flights (environmental reasons) even though they tend to be pricier. If you're trying to save every penny, multi-stop flights might be cheaper for you.

Moreover, it's a good idea to have a rough idea of how much you'll be spending per day, so you can make adjustments if necessary. To give you an idea of what a budget for a three-week trip to Mexico could look like, here's an example of estimated costs.

As shown by the following list of our travel costs, there are many factors to consider when planning a trip to Mexico to estimate total costs. However, if you stay organized and flexible in your decisions,

Staying and Accommodations

In Mexico, you'll find various types of accommodation. You can stay in hammocks, as well as in hostels, hostals, and hotels of all price ranges. You have the most control over this factor in your budget and can choose your preferred type of accommodation*.

In a cabin, you have your own private room (often double, triple, or quadruple rooms are available) with a private bathroom, but no breakfast included.

  • Cheapest accommodation: $5 - $20 per night, cabin or hostel without private bathroom, usually in a dormitory
  • Accommodation in a mid-range hotel: $20-$50 per night in a double room

Prices vary by region and season (especially the Yucatan region, Quintana Roo, and specifically Tulum are more expensive). We always checked booking.com or agoda 2-3 days prior for special deals in the low price range ($0 - $49) and thus always found really nice accommodations.

*I am no longer a typical hostel-goer, avoid dormitories, and prefer a private room with a private bathroom. Since I have a steady income, I don't want to worry about money while traveling.

Food Prices in Mexico

You can save money by cooking for yourself. You'll find everything you need in the supermarkets; there's a 7-Eleven in every city. You can buy fresh fruits and vegetables at markets (especially the strawberries and avocados are super delicious).

I was always eating. A typical meal in Mexico costs similarly to Germany. Here too, prices vary depending on where you are. Yucatan is generally more expensive than Chiapas.

For our meals, we paid an average of the following:

  • Nice dinner at a restaurant with a drink: approx. $6 - $15 (In Tulum, we spent $25 per person for fish, which is extremely above the average price. Tulum is one of the most expensive destinations)
  • In the supermarket: 1L of water: 5 MXN, beer: 8 MXN

Using Public Transport (Bus and Taxi)

The transportation network in Mexico is excellently developed. You have the option of long-distance buses (1st and 2nd class), collectivos (for shorter distances), and, of course, rental cars. We opted out of the latter.

The buses are quite comfortable, air-conditioned, and generally quite punctual.

  • Bus ticket from Tulum to Chetumal (about 4 hours): 204 MXN ($11.50)
  • Palenque to San Cristobal de las Casas (about 5-6 hours): 110 MXN ($6)
  • Night bus ride from San Cristobal de las Casas to Merida (about 14-16 hours): 618 MXN ($35)
  • Bus fare from Merida to Tulum (about 4 hours): 240 MXN ($13.50)
  • Short taxi ride in Tulum (from beach to Centro, about 10 mins): 50 MXN ($2.80)
  • Short taxi ride in Tulum (from beach to ADO bus terminal, about 15 mins): 80 MXN ($4.50)

Tickets for Entrance Fees & Activities

In Mexico, you can experience and try an incredible number of things. I unfortunately did not dive in Mexico but went snorkeling instead. It's really worth it since the Belize Barrier Reef is alive.

Exit Fees from Mexico

Those leaving by plane who did not book a package deal must pay an exit fee. We had to pay twice: exit from Mexico to Belize: 295 MXN exit fee (as of 2014) and upon departure from Cancun to Germany, the same exit fee again. No point in discussing.

  • Total budget for 3 weeks without flight: approx. $1,300 (with detour to Guatemala and Belize).
  • Average daily budget: $62

You can save an incredible amount of money by staying in hostels, cooking for yourself, and doing fewer activities. You can always do less, but I want to make the most of my time available. I want to enjoy my trips and do what I feel like without worrying about money.

You can also save by traveling less and restricting yourself to fewer places. Medications and personal care products (like shampoos, sunscreen, etc.) are as expensive as in Germany.
