Miami Airport Transfer Tips

Miami Airport Transfer

Before my trip to Miami, I pondered how to get from Miami International Airport to my accommodation in Miami Beach (South Beach) in the best and fastest way. After traveling in Central America, I didn't want to use public transportation and was simply too lazy for that.

The next day, I took public transportation to the airport to pick up my travel companion and our rental car.

A tip for renting a car in Miami: If you're planning a road trip through Florida and are first spending a few days in Miami or Miami Beach, you might want to consider picking up the rental car later.

Not only do you save on daily rental fees, but you also avoid the ridiculously high parking fees in the city. We used one of the 'cheaper' parking garages in South Beach (12th Street) and still paid $20 (which is $1 per hour).

Information about Miami International Airport

Miami International Airport is the third-largest airport in the U.S. (after JFK in New York and Los Angeles International Airport). Florida has many other airports served from Germany, but Miami International Airport is the largest in Florida.

The airport mainly serves as a hub for flights to South and Central America as well as the Caribbean. I also traveled from Honduras, which is just a 2-hour flight away.

MIA Mover - Transportation at Miami Airport

Miami Airport has only one terminal, which is divided into individual sections. To move between the sections of the terminal (North Terminal, South Terminal, or Central Terminal), the shuttles, or to the rental car pick-up area, Miami offers moving walkways. The MIA Mover connects the different sections of the terminal and allows for quick movement within the airport.

If you want to pick up your rental car or get to the MIA Metrorail station, Tri-Rail terminal, or the bus station, you will use this transportation option. This gets you quickly from the International Arrivals, usually in Sector J/H, to the shuttles, taxis, or public transportation, which are then located to your left in the airport.

Public Transportation in Miami

Regular buses, trains, and the MIA Mover operate between the airport and Miami. Taxis and various shuttle providers are also available. Here are your options:

Miami Beach with the Airport Flyer ($2.65)

The Miami Beach Airport Flyer (Bus 150) is the quickest and cheapest way to get to Miami Beach or the airport. For just $2.65 (one way), you can take a comfortable bus. The bus runs every 30 minutes and offers an additional express service from 6 AM to 11:40 PM.

Departure at the airport is the Metrorail station, just a short MIA Mover ride away from MIA Airport. In Miami Beach, the bus stops between 41st Street and South Point Drive (View map with stops). A ride to the airport takes about 30 minutes.

Look for the bus with the number 150. Then you're in the right place.

Tip: Have exact change ready if possible. You don't get change and can't pay with a credit card!

With Supershuttle to Miami Beach ($22)

Fast, convenient, and the cheapest option with the 'Shared-Ride-Van' after the Miami Beach Airport Flyer.

I took the Supershuttle to my accommodation in South Beach upon my arrival in Miami, or rather, I was driven by a driver.

I booked my ticket online in advance ($22) and was able to check in online upon arrival. The shuttle departs from Terminal D (accessible via the moving walkways in the airport to the left since you usually arrive at Terminal J).

At the counter, you check in (Exit 7, Terminal D) and receive a confirmation. The driver loads your luggage, and if you're lucky, you'll be off quickly. My vehicle was filled with 11 people swiftly, and we set off for Miami Beach. I was fortunate enough to be the first to get off, so it took hardly 20 minutes to arrive at my accommodation. It doesn't get any more comfortable or faster!

Information about Supershuttle in Miami:

  • The shuttle runs 24 hours a day
  • Up to 11 passengers can fit; if you're lucky, you might be alone
  • You can also book a VIP shuttle just for you
  • Passengers are dropped off at their accommodations one after the other. Depending on the circumstances, this can be quick or take some time
  • Departure is at Terminal D, Exit 7 or

By Taxi from Miami to Miami Beach

There are always enough taxis available in front of the baggage claim halls on the arrival level of the terminal. A taxi ride to downtown Miami costs about $30.

For the trip to my accommodation in South Beach, I would have had to pay about $32.50 without a tip according to official information. Since Florida is really expensive, it's worth comparing prices. Taxi fares in Miami are set and can be viewed here.

With Uber from the Airport to the City

In hindsight, I regret not checking the prices with Uber right away. While traveling, I prefer using this app when there's no subway or metro nearby. This is an app you can download to your smartphone in Germany. Upon arrival, you can order an Uber driver to your accommodation using the 30 minutes of free Wi-Fi and see right away how much the ride will cost.

I love this service, and the transfer from the airport to my accommodation in South Beach would have been $3 cheaper than the SuperShuttle transport.
