A Perfect Day in Neukölln: Tips from a Local
In recent years, Berlin's capital has undergone a complete transformation. Neukölln is now as popular as Prenzlauer Berg used to be. Betting shops are slowly being replaced by cafes and fashion stores. There's one more reason to visit the Neukölln neighborhood.
Why search for tips when you can know a Berlin local who has plenty of travel advice for Berlin-Neukölln? Let me introduce you: Berta, 33, a Berlin native, living in Neukölln, and publisher of the wonderful Berlin Pocket Guides BertaBerlin.
Breakfast at Café Ungeheuer
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day for me, so let's head to Café Ungeheuer on Emserstrasse. My tip for breakfast: omelets or Greek yogurt combined with a freshly baked croissant.
Körnerpark
Feeling refreshed, it's off to Körnerpark. A piece of Charlottenburg without the castle in Neukölln. This 2.4-hectare green space is a pleasant surprise for everyone in the gritty Neukölln area. Well-kept flower beds, fountains, and even an orangery. Concerts often take place on its terrace in the summer (free of charge).
Note: The park is closed on Mondays!
Tempelhofer Feld
I really enjoy Tempelhofer Feld! Here you have so much space (after all, it used to be an airport) that you can relax wonderfully.
You can bike (or walk) around Tempelhofer Feld, stroll through the gardens, or sit down on the lawn to watch kitesurfers and skateboarders. Sometimes I have a picnic here. If I don't bring something myself, I get takeout from Mmaaham Columbiadamm for a Bulgogi BBQ.
You definitely shouldn't miss the next tip!
Tempelhofer Feld, located directly at the former airport, is now a popular recreational area. Opening hours vary with the seasons (typically from 6 AM to 10:30 PM).

Former Berlin Tempelhof Airport
Originally built by the Nazis in a grand delusion as Europe's largest building, it remains one of the most spectacular buildings in the world today. A visit to the former airport as part of a tourist tour is an absolute must.
Book a ticket for the Mythos Tempelhof Tour. Since the airport is listed as a historical monument, the runway must always be recognizable as such.

Information about Tempelhofer Feld and Tempelhof Airport
- Getting there by public transport: Entrance to Tempelhofer Feld from Neukölln via U8: Boddinstraße or Leinestraße. Ring train and S8 station Tempelhof. For the airport building: U6 Paradestraße or Platz der Luftbrücke.
Ankerklause
This is the perfect spot to set sail by boat or paddleboard: Ankerklause. Situated right by the Landwehrkanal, Ankerklause is ideal if you have a boat with you.
Rooftop Bar Klunkerkranich for Sunset
Especially recommended in the evening is to watch the sunset from the rooftop bar Klunkerkranich on Karl-Marx-Straße. But be careful, it's quite popular, so you shouldn't arrive just before sunset. Otherwise, you might end up seeing it from a queue.
More Tips
Cafés and Restaurants I Recommend
- Café Espera on Sonnenallee. The café not only has incredibly friendly service but also offers lovingly prepared treats with homemade sauces and fresh market ingredients. Highlight: The cinnamon rolls!
- Dr. To's. Dr. To's offers a mix of Japanese and Chinese cuisine. The Asian ceviche makes you briefly feel like you're at the seaside.
- Industry Standard for dinner. Industry Standard is run by a Norwegian, an Irishman, and a Mexican. A culinary hotspot that makes every food lover happy. My personal favorite is their blood cake.
Evening Out Tips
If you're in Berlin over the weekend, you might want to visit Griessmühle. It's Berlin's only electronic club accessible by water. This way, you also save on the entrance fee (Oops, did I really say that?).
Around the corner from these two restaurants, you'll find the Bar Tier, where you can tell the bartender how you feel and get the perfect drink.
Rent a Bike!
Definitely rent a bike for the day, for example, at Rent a Bike 44 on Mahlower Strasse. They have very fair prices and are incredibly helpful. Nowadays, there are e-scooters and rental bikes at every corner that you can easily borrow.
Tip for a Travel Guide
Buy the Neukölln fold-out map BertaBerlin for just 5 Euros at walk-this-way.net.
The city map is equipped with three walking tours through Berlin-Neukölln and many tips for markets, accommodation, restaurants, cafes, and further recommendations in the neighborhood.
Berta is at home in Berlin-Neukölln, and I wish I had this wonderful guide & city map with me during my first visit to Berlin.
