Our Favorite Ski Resorts in Austria
In the early morning, carving turns on beautiful slopes in deep snow-whether skiing or snowboarding-preferably in sunny weather. A dream, right?
But it often takes a while before that happens. Where, when, and especially what accommodation should we book? That's why we've started compiling a list of all the ski resorts we've visited in Austria. The list will be updated gradually.
If you have any further tips for great ski resorts and accommodations, please leave a comment at the end of the article.
Ski Resort Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn in Salzburg
Since her youth, Isa has enjoyed many winters on the approximately 270 beautiful skiable kilometers in Saalbach-Hinterglemm and the surrounding area. Everything here is just right-tradition is preserved, and Isa can look forward to it every year. Each year, new surprises await her and ensure that the ski circus in Salzburg remains her absolute favorite. With 70 cable cars and lifts, as well as breathtaking deep snow slopes, there is endless variety.
The day pass costs €72 during peak season.
Obertauern - Austria's Snowiest Ski Resort
The ski resort of Obertauern is not on every winter sports enthusiast's radar. However, Obertauern is a snow paradise and the snowiest ski resort in Austria, guaranteeing plenty of snow. The season lasts from November to May, making it extremely long-almost like in the Canadian Rocky Mountains!
The day pass costs an average of €59.
Detailed tips for the Obertauern ski resort in winter
Ski Resort Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis
With over 67 facilities and 212 kilometers of slopes, this ski area truly offers pure fun! It is especially popular with families due to the wide slopes, surrounded by countless lovingly designed details, that make their way down to the valley.
Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis would likely just be another ski resort on our list where we have 'been before'-if we hadn't been greeted by pure sunshine and a clear blue sky in the nearly 3,000-meter-high Tyrolean ski area.
My Conclusion:
Superbly groomed slopes await us in this snow-scarce winter in the region of Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis-Austria's largest ski paradise for children. Recently this has also become my personal favorite ski resort. Long lines at the lifts are non-existent.
At the valley station, we have the luxury of choice: Four mountain lifts stand ready to whisk us quickly up. We choose the Alpkopfbahn to make our first turns on skis and snowboard on the bear slope.
The clever traffic light system at the valley station and the extremely helpful lift staff, who take my snowboard and assist children, minimize our waiting time. Truly excellent service.
The Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis ski area really offers something for every skill level and is not just a ski paradise for children.
Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis offers not only themed lifts but also themed slopes: The bear slope features tunnels, mini-jumps, and level boxes integrated into the snow-all in the shape of bears. Variety on the slope is provided, including the opportunity to playfully and, above all, safely be introduced to riding in the fun park. Awesome!
Wildschönau - Skiing in Tyrol
Wildschönau is only 1.5 hours by car below Munich in the Kufstein district of Tyrol. Perfect for a short weekend in Austria.
Once at the top of Schatzberg, it's easy to understand why the ski portal Snowplaza named Wildschönau one of the 'Top 15 Ski Resorts of 2015.' From the summit, you have a stunning view of the 145 kilometers of slopes. Especially the 7-kilometer-long valley run will surely make every skier's heart race. If you're not out of breath here, you're doing something wrong!
- The day pass costs €68 in peak season with a guest card.
- Opening hours: Daily from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM.
Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena - Ski Resort of Lermoos
What skier or snowboarder doesn't know the drill: Sweaty and exhausted, one stands in line at one of the 43 six-seater lifts by 10 AM after hours of travel to the ski resort, waiting for a coveted spot to take you to the summit along with hundreds of others.
Once you reach the top, you face a choice: Which of the over 200 kilometers of slopes to tackle first? And you're left wondering: Is the meticulous planning of the strategically optimal route worth it and does the €75 day ski pass pay off?
If you're in Lermoos, it looks different!
On about 27 kilometers of slopes, the ski resort offers everything you need for a perfect ski day! Well-groomed wide slopes lead down to the valley. At the summit, about 2,100 meters high, you're greeted by an almost 360° panoramic view.
With Zugspitze right in front of you, you'll experience skiing as it should be!
In a naturally preserved ski area, far from the hustle and bustle and overcrowded slopes. Pure relaxation!
Conclusion about the Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena ski resort in Lermoos:
Why travel far when the good is so close? That's exactly it! I was pleasantly surprised by two truly wonderful ski resorts in the area I know like the back of my hand, packed with many small and large highlights.
For €61.50, the day ski pass isn't a bargain, but the slope conditions and especially the charm of the two ski resorts make up for it. Plus, the money is visibly reinvested-among other things, in new lift facilities.
And for all early birds: The lifts open at 8:30 AM in both ski resorts!
