Best Time to Visit South Africa

Spring and fall are the best times to travel to South Africa. During these seasons, the temperatures are pleasantly mild for safaris and outdoor activities. For those who, like me, enjoy warm temperatures, Christmas and New Year's can be spent under the South African sun. An ideal winter escape location. Unfortunately, this is peak season, and you won't be alone.

I am Katrin, I love South Africa and have been here nine times, making me an expert on South Africa. In this article, I will share how I experienced spring, summer, fall, and winter in South Africa. I'll explain when the best time is for a safari, ideal outdoor activities, and when you can best watch whales.

Since I frequently receive questions about the best time to travel to South Africa, I've written down my experiences here.

Compact Summary

The best time for South Africa depends on the journey and the activities you want to undertake.

The best time to travel to South Africa is spring and fall: from March to May and September to November. The temperatures are pleasantly mild throughout the country and ideal for a road trip. Many Europeans wish to escape winter and use the months of December and January to travel to warmer climates, celebrating Christmas or New Year's there and enjoying the summer. That's when it's warmest here with long days filled with sunshine.

Note: Since South Africa is south of the equator, its seasons are opposite to ours. Our winter means summer in South Africa. As many Germans (myself included) like to escape winter temperatures, you'll find many Germans in South Africa from December to March. This is also the driest season, enhancing your chances of observing wildlife during safaris as they gather around waterholes.

  • January: Suitable for road trips across the country, but often difficult for wildlife sightings due to heavy rainfall. Peak season around New Year.
  • February: Optimal travel time with less rain in national parks. My favorite month, less crowded than January.
  • March: Best for road trips, perfect in Cape Town and the Garden Route, as well as Kruger National Park and safaris. My favorite month along with February.
  • April: Autumn in Cape Town, it gets extremely windy. Still good for road trips.
  • May: Good for road trips across the country, not my favorite month for a vacation.
  • June: Winter on the Cape Peninsula, it rains a lot. Ideal for safaris.
  • July: Winter on the Cape Peninsula and inland, it rains a lot. After sunset, temperatures can drop to 5 - 10°C. Ideal for safaris.
  • August: Winter on the Cape Peninsula and inland, it rains a lot. First whales appear near Hermanus. Ideal for the west coast and wildflower blooming.
  • September: Ideal for whale watching on the Garden Route, spring in the Cape. Wildflower blooming in Western Cape.
  • October: Ideal for whale watching on the Garden Route.
  • November: Off-season and higher temperatures in the Cape (very windy), good for wildlife sightings in Kruger National Park (young animals).
  • December: Peak season across the country (summer holidays in South Africa). It gets hot in the Cape, rainy season in Kruger National Park.

Climate Table for South Africa

When looking at the climate table for South Africa, it is important to note that the country has great geographical diversity with various climate zones, leading to significant regional differences. The following table shows general average values, but keep in mind that climate data for specific regions like the Western Cape, the highlands, or the coastal regions can vary. In case of doubt, refer to the climate tables for the respective regions separately.

Near the coast, temperatures are generally milder. Water temperatures vary significantly depending on the coastal segment (Atlantic or Indian Ocean).

Seasons in South Africa

Summer in South Africa - Peak Season (November to March)

The South African summer lasts from about November to the end of March. When it becomes gray and rainy here, summer arrives in South Africa. My favorite travel time from mid-December to the end of January is peak season in South Africa. Locals have summer holidays, and Europeans escape to the warmth of South Africa.

Especially around the Cape Peninsula, Garden Route, and Kruger National Park, as well as Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park, you should book accommodations and trips well in advance. Prices are highest during this period.

In Kruger National Park, temperatures hover around 20 degrees and it is rainy season. This lasts from mid-October to the end of January. However, it rarely rains or, if it does, it's often in the form of torrential tropical downpours. Roads in national parks in the east are often flooded.

The thermometer rises steadily starting in November. It is hottest in January and February, with temperatures around 30 degrees (and higher).

Days are mostly dry, with occasional heat storms.

  • + Plenty of sunshine during the day with summery temperatures
  • + Ideal winter destination
  • + Dozens of festivals and events: Kirstenbosch Summer Concerts, Cape Town Minstrel Carnival, Cape Town International Jazz Festival
  • + Young animals in Kruger National Park and other parks in the east
  • - Flights are very expensive (often over $1,000)
  • - Accommodations are pricier and often booked out months in advance (early booking is advisable)
  • - Many tourists throughout the country
  • - Rainy season in Kruger National Park

Winter in South Africa (June to August)

When it is summer for us, it is winter in South Africa. Particularly in the Cape region, it can get cool. In Cape Town, daytime temperatures are a comfortable 14 to 18 degrees, but you will need a jacket after sunset. In Sutherland, the coldest place in South Africa, the thermometer can drop below 0 degrees. I've experienced this myself.

Since dry season occurs in the east of the country, this time is ideal for wildlife observation. Water is scarce, the savanna is sparse, and animals are easier to find and see.

  • + Ideal for the east and national parks for wildlife observation
  • + Also worth it in the north: Off to Kgalagadi National Park
  • + Wildflower blooming in Namaqualand, a stunning event
  • + Cheaper prices and fewer tourists in the country
  • - Nights can be very cold
  • - In Cape Town and Western Cape, it can even snow

Is There a Rainy Season?

The rainy season on the Garden Route is from August to October. The rainy season in the east at Kruger National Park lasts from mid-October until April.

Check my detailed tables for these regions. I'll also provide my recommendations for the best travel times:

What Do You Want to Do in South Africa?

I find it difficult to recommend the ideal time to travel to South Africa. What constitutes the optimal travel time for you depends on which regions of South Africa you want to visit and how much you enjoy larger temperature differences. Do you prefer places with mild summer nights around 20 degrees, or do you prefer cooler environments?

What do you want to do in the country? Do you wish to go on safari, hike, participate in other outdoor activities, have a beach vacation, or explore the cities? Depending on your interests, different regions and seasons are suitable for a visit.

As South Africa is in the southern hemisphere, its seasons are fundamentally opposite to those of Germany. When it is winter for us, everything blooms in South Africa and temperatures are around or above 30 degrees.

My Experiences

South Africa is an excellent travel destination throughout the year. For example, I was in South Africa from the end of November until shortly after Christmas. In four weeks, I traveled through all regions and experienced a variety of climatic conditions. Another time, I was in South Africa in the winter (August) traveling from Cape Town to the Kalahari at the border with Namibia. It rained a lot, and it was quite cold. Especially the nights were extremely chilly with temperatures dropping to 10°C.

Once, I was in March at Kruger National Park and neighboring game reserves. It was extremely hot and dry.

In the following sections, I will share which times are best for visiting the various regions and attractions in South Africa.

Best Time to Visit Kruger National Park

Kruger Park is a year-round destination, with each season offering its highlights. It is generally said that the best time to visit Kruger National Park is between June and November (dry season). The months of September, October, and November are the prettiest because that is when most wild animals give birth. If you want to see young lions or elephant calves, this is the best season.

Kruger National Park has a hot, subtropical climate, and most of the year, daytime temperatures exceed 25 °C. The peak season also occurs here during the South African summer holidays from Christmas until mid-January. I love the months from January to March. I enjoy the heat, and from mid-January, the tourist influx slowly decreases.

The rainy season lasts from mid-October until April. It is very hot, with temperatures climbing above 30 °C during the day, often reaching up to 40 °C or even higher. Torrential rains can make game drives impossible.

Although large parts of South Africa lie on the coast, for me, South Africa is not really a beach vacation destination. The ocean is quite cold. I've swum in the sea only once out of eight trips.

There isn't an optimal time for safaris in national parks and game reserves. Locals and rangers will recommend using the South African winter (June - September). It rarely rains during this time, the steppe and grass are very low and flat. Trees and bushes often have no or few leaves, making animals easy to spot.

Due to the dry climate, animals tend to congregate around the few available water sources. Safari conditions improve the chances of spotting wildlife. It becomes quite easy to see animals.

However, there is generally always less water, so even during the South African summer months, rivers are often dry. Climate change is noticeable here as well.

For anyone saying, "But it can get quite chilly in winter," they haven't been on a safari in December, the South African summer. Even then, you need a jacket before sunrise.

Best Time to Visit Cape Town & Cape Peninsula

I fell in love with Cape Town and the Western Cape immediately. The city is exciting and offers many things to enjoy. Not only landscapes and history but also culturally. The climate in Cape Town is equally appealing.

Climate Table for Cape Town and the Cape Peninsula

Here is the climate table for Cape Town and the Cape Peninsula in the Western Cape region, broken down by month.

The Cape region also has many attractions. Here you can find my favorite spot in Cape Town (-> comprehensive guide) and Cape Peninsula: Cape Town Attractions.

When is the Climate Optimal and When is the Best Time to Visit Cape Town and the Cape Region?

The ideal months are in African spring from late August to mid-November or in January and February. The temperatures are pleasant and perfect for sightseeing. It's not too hot, but not too cold either. The wind blows comfortably and not constantly. Due to its coastal location, Cape Town is generally quite pleasant. However, it can rain. As I recently experienced in August, sometimes there can be torrential rainfall. You probably wouldn't expect that, would you?

Peak season in South Africa (and Cape Town) is around Christmas and New Year's. Locals have summer holidays then. It is warm, sometimes really hot and the wind is hardly blowing. The chances of visiting Table Mountain with a clear blue sky are best during this time.

We were lucky three days before our return flight to Germany on our first trip and were able to take the cable car up Table Mountain. During all eight visits to Cape Town, there were at least 1 to 2 days when the cable cars were not operating. This is completely normal in Cape Town. There are plenty of other activities you can do instead. Check out my Cape Town tips for activities and excursions (also with kids). Still, plan for a buffer if you really want to get to Table Mountain.

By the end of January, temperatures are pleasantly warm. Thanks to the wind, it never gets too hot; the climate is enjoyable. However, don't underestimate the sun and UV radiation in January. Some of my travel companions got a sunburn while visiting the Cape of Good Hope and (probably) a slight sunstroke.

Avoid Peak Season in Cape Town Around Christmas

If you want to avoid long queues at attractions, I recommend visiting in the fall or after the Christmas holidays in South Africa. Fall is between March - May. This time offers a very pleasant climate with agreeable temperatures. Many travelers recommend this season as the best for South Africa and the Cape region.

Winter can be quite cold, especially in June, July, and August. Daytime temperatures in sunny weather are around 16 - 20 degrees. Once the sun sets, it becomes cold. A warm jacket is mandatory.

An accommodation with heating is advantageous!

Best Time for a South Africa Road Trip

Road trips in South Africa, even beyond the Garden Route, are becoming increasingly popular. Why not? The roads are generally in great condition. Passing through or staying in Swaziland and Lesotho can be done without issue. So when is the optimal travel time for South Africa if you're planning a road trip?

South Africa is suitable for road trips year-round. The best travel time for a road trip through South Africa is from November to April. The climate is pleasantly warm in both Cape Town and along the Garden Route, as well as Johannesburg. At night, especially in December, it can be quite cool in Kruger National Park.

Durban best travel time
Durban, cloudy, windy, and drizzling. Not at all "The hottest place to be" during our visit. photo by viel-unterwegs.de

The climate during my travels was very variable. In Johannesburg one day it was 35 degrees and the next day, while driving to Kruger National Park, it suddenly rained. The temperatures suddenly dropped to only 18 degrees. Recently, the opposite was true: Johannesburg was cloudy with a cool 16 degrees. Then in Kruger National Park, it was 32 degrees. Still quite 'cool' for February, I was told.

In Durban, it rained during our visit and it was not at all "The hottest place to be," as the city's slogan proclaims. Only after Port Elizabeth on the way back to Cape Town did the thermometer climb back over the 30-degree mark.

A tip is to avoid the rainy season from January to March. Particularly the routes in the national parks, which are often made of clay and dirt, can quickly become impassable. Rainfall frequently occurs, including thunderstorms and heavy rains with possible flooding.

Best Time for the Garden Route

The optimal travel time for a journey along the Garden Route by the Indian Ocean and the Cape Peninsula is between September and April. In September it is spring, and in April it's late summer. Therefore, these months are highly recommended as it can be very hot along the coast in summer.

From mid-January until about mid-March, as the peak season winds down, it is warm and rain showers are rare. This period is especially lovely for visiting South Africa's south.

Because in December South Africa has summer holidays, coastal towns are especially crowded around Christmas and New Year's. Prices increase significantly. As I mentioned, we had a real problem finding a restaurant for dinner in Hermanus because locals had reserved tables in advance. Peak season for the Garden Route is from mid-December to mid-January.

The rainiest months are June - August.

Best Time to Visit Tsitsikamma National Park

In Tsitsikamma National Park near Port Elizabeth, the climate is mild all year round. Therefore, you can visit here year-round. Only between August and October do you experience more short rain showers. In March, it can also rain more often.

Best Time to Visit Northern Cape

In the Northern Cape, it depends on what you want to do. If you want to see the wildflower bloom (the reason for my visit), you should come in August/September when spring begins. However, in recent years, there has been no guarantee of wildflowers. In 2017, there was no bloom at all. Due to climate change, there wasn't enough rain for the flowers to bloom.

I was lucky: Although the blossoms were reportedly only '40% open', the sight was still vibrant and very intensely colored. Wow!

However, this time of year can be very changeable. Temperatures vary from 10 to 24 degrees during the day, and at night, the temperature often drops to 0 degrees. Accommodations are not always built to suit the climate. In Sutherland (imagine this), the houses had fireplaces, but heating, as we know it, was absent. Definitely pack warm shoes, jackets, and sweaters with gloves and hats!

A visit is certainly worthwhile. The further north you go in the Northern Cape toward Namibia/Botswana, the warmer it becomes. No wonder temperatures here exceed 30 - often even 40 degrees in 10 of 12 months. I love the Kalahari Desert to pieces and enjoy high temperatures with desert climates.

Best Time to Visit the East Coast

KwaZuluNatal with Hluhluwe National Park, St. Lucia and Durban are ideal travel destinations from March to October. The Wild Coast, on the other hand, is perfect in the months of November to early February.

The east coast has a subtropical climate. In summer, it is very humid and hot. Rain can occur frequently. That is why we recommend visiting during the winter months (summer in Germany).

A special highlight of the east coast: the Sardine Run. Millions of sardines migrate up the east coast, followed by thousands of sharks, whales, dolphins, and birds. I would love to experience this phenomenon live! For divers, it's the highlight of South Africa!
