Checklist for Traveling with a Baby: What You Really Need When Traveling with a Baby.

Here you will find my packing list for traveling with a baby, ensuring you have everything necessary for a relaxed time with your little travel buddy.

Note: This article contains useful and helpful items that make traveling with a baby (up to 1 year) more comfortable and enjoyable. I won't cover the basic essentials for your baby (clothing, hygiene items, etc.) here.

My 9 Must-Haves Beyond the Basics

  • A lightweight, stable, and foldable travel stroller
  • Baby carrier
  • Foldable bed guard (fits in a suitcase)
  • Baby first aid kit
  • Portable bottle warmer
  • Microwave sterilization bags
  • Cup catcher
  • Suction spinner toy
  • Unbreakable book

Of course, you don't need to bring all the items listed on your travels. The packing list provides an overview and inspiration, along with product recommendations for things I find particularly useful and helpful. It doesn't matter if you're going away for just a weekend or planning a long-distance trip - let's be honest, you can't really travel light with a baby anyway.

Important: Don't Forget Your Child's ID!

I want to give you a small reminder: Remember that your baby will need an ID or passport when traveling abroad. This can usually be issued directly at the local government office, and a biometric passport photo is necessary. For travel within the European Union, Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein, as well as trips to Turkey, an ID is sufficient. For travel outside the EU, your child will need a passport. Starting in 2024, children's passports will be valid for six years and will no longer need to be reissued annually as previously required.

Basic Essentials "The Basics"

  • Infant car seat for safe transport in the car
  • Travel stroller (see below)
  • Insect net
  • Baby carrier or sling (see below)
  • Children's passport
  • Health insurance card
  • Diaper bag with changing mat, diapers, ointment, and wipes
  • Body suits
  • Slee pajamas
  • Sleeping bag
  • Burp cloths
  • Sufficient number of outfits (depending on the season)
  • Socks (they tend to get lost quickly)
  • Beanie (important especially in air-conditioned buildings, cars, and airplanes)

If needed:

  • Pacifier
  • Bottles + formula
  • Baby food
  • Bib

Travel Stroller

Tips for Flying with a Baby

For me, an absolute must-have is a lightweight yet sturdy stroller that folds with just one hand and can easily fit in the airplane's carry-on luggage. This way, you can wheel your baby directly to the airplane door, and you always have a safe and comfortable spot for your baby during the trip.

Make sure the stroller can recline flat; this allows even infants who cannot sit up to lie down comfortably and safely while sleeping.

Many airlines allow you to bring a travel stroller (travel buggy) in your carry-on as long as it meets certain size restrictions. Please check the respective regulations of the airlines. There are now many manufacturers that produce travel strollers for carry-on luggage.

My favorite is the Joolz Aer +. It meets the above parameters and comes with an extra large sun canopy that can be pulled far forward and an extra large storage basket.

Baby Carrier for Quick Uses

Your baby will likely be safest and happiest close to you. For spontaneous outings, alongside a classic carrier or sling, this baby carrier is perfect for ergonomically lifting and carrying your child (from 6 months to about 36 months) securely and comfortably.

  • In addition to our regular ErgoBaby carrier, I also use the baby carrier from family-land.de (check it out here). It fits into any handbag and is always with me.

Bed Guard

Way more space-efficient than a travel crib and compatible with any bed, a foldable yet stable bed guard can be transported in your suitcase. My favorite for flights without excess baggage. This keeps your baby safe beside you while sleeping.

If you prefer something handier and more compact, you can opt for the inflatable version, but I would only recommend this for slightly older children as they are lower.

Travel Pharmacy & Emergency Kit

Of course, I wish you a worry-free vacation. Illnesses in toddlers are unfortunately common and don't take a break during vacation time. It's better to have a solid travel pharmacy and emergency box at hand. This way, you can be sure you have the right things readily available.

Besides the usual baby pharmacy (fever suppositories or juice, something for colics and stomach aches, etc.), I recommend an emergency box for first aid for children (also suitable for older kids) containing useful items like a thermometer, saline solution, compresses, tick card, and much more. This way, you have everything on hand and don't have to think too long before traveling about what you need to bring.

For this, I use the practical Dr. Till children's emergency kit bag for child first aid. It contains the essentials.

Portable Bottle Warmer

If your baby is bottle-fed, a travel-friendly, portable bottle warmer that can be charged via USB is ideal for road trips or long travels.

Make sure it's a 'warmer' and not just a 'hot holder.'

Tip: The Tommee Tippee LetsGo is not just for bottles from the manufacturer but also works for MAM and Philips Avent bottles.

Microwave Sterilization Bags

Especially when you might not have access to a steam sterilizer while traveling, you can easily and safely sterilize bottles, pacifiers, and more with special microwave bags, thus eliminating germs.

I use this one from Philips

Cup Catcher

As soon as your baby discovers that it can throw things like drinking cups and toys, the so-called cup catchers will become your lifesaver. The flexible silicone bands keep everything in place, so nothing gets lost or dirty. They can be easily attached to car seats, strollers, or high chairs.

Suction Spinner Toy

A fun game for the road cannot miss on your journey. The spinners can be safely placed on all smooth surfaces thanks to their suction cup. For example, on the airplane window or on the table. This educational toy promotes your baby's hand-eye coordination and the bright colors enhance its cognitive abilities.

Unbreakable Book

For good entertainment on the go, I find unbreakable books very practical. Just stuff them into your bag quickly or hand them over to busy baby hands - no problem, they hold up well. Plus, they are lightweight and fit into any travel luggage.

Check out the unbreakable books here.

Booster Seat for Toddlers

Practical for all children who can already sit: An inflatable children's seat for secure sitting on all chairs and benches. This way, you won't be reliant on a high chair.
